Business Class Seats on A380 on Points

Because QF operate the lousy midget A330 to BKK, I have found it impossible to ever get a J seat either way on points. Coming back is more important than going as it is an overnight flight, and a nice J "suite", would be nice. However, I usually manage to get a Y seat on QF23/24 leaving on 1 JUN and returning on 29 AUG, but QF offer up a lot of cough connections via HKG, MEL and BNE, if you are unlucky.

The lousy midget with a better J hard product compared to the A380/747?

I have never experienced the new A330 J product, though I have walked through the cabin to eyeball the look! I was, I guess, bemoaning the demise of the B747 service, where I have experienced the J cabin, which by modern standards was outmoded, but I liked the atmosphere. There was the great little area near the bottom of the upper deck stairs where I met a number of interesting public figures, while we engaged in a beverage or two and a long chat!

J/F award seats to BKK used to be the easiest to harvest - then BA pulled out :( Been a drought ever since...

Great use of points. Much better than e.g. letting them expire (not that any regular on AFF would be likely to do that).

I have never had points expire. The only points I have ever lost were about 200 000when Air NZ shot down Ansett. I still reckon that we should have broken off diplomatic relations with NZ over that!

I thought BA were hideous. On one occasion they humiliated me at the check-in counter, then again about the same matter at the boarding lounge. I never flew them again, and was not unhappy to see them leave the route. I won't fly Emirates for a number of reasons, one of which is their late arrival in BKK, so I am stuck with QF cattle class. :-(

The itinerary that I originally posted is the one I flew. Apologies for the typo: QXB should have read DXB

Now I am even more confused!

You said the following: Pehaps the most comfortable leg was the last - LAX - SYD in J upstairs on a QF 747.

But your itinerary says you flew from HNL-SYD?

SYD - DXB F (QF)
QXB - LHR F (BA)
MXP - MAD J (IB)
MAD - LHR J (BA)
LHR - DFW PE (BA)
DFW - SAF Y (AA)
SAF - LAX Y (AA)
LAX - SAN Y (AA)
SAN - LAX Y (AA)
LAX - HNL Y (AA)
HNL - LAX Y (AA)
HNL - SYD J (QF)

Pehaps the most comfortable leg was the last - LAX - SYD in J upstairs on a QF 747.

Edit: Oh wait I think I figured it out. That last leg should be LAX-SYD not HNL-SYD! Apologies everyone for going around in circles!

That was a square up for the 'underarm incident'..

I try to avoid QF23/QF24 unless booking cheap flights earning SCs and bonus points.

I usually travel via HKG, SIN, KUL for the better aircraft. Couldn't care less about having to connect.

Very interesting that you should say that JohnK. I would never go via HKG, but I have done both SIN and KUL. But because I prefer daylight flights to BKK, I find QF23 best, as I have another 2 hour bus trip to get me to my hotel at a reasonable time and to be able to go out for dinner that night. Most of the time, Scoot and AirAsia are just not worth the trouble, as timings are bad and both use DMK, and when not using QF F/.F points, the fare is bearable on Qantas.

For me the ultimate in travel is 747.

What I've been doing last 4-5 trips is using AA miles for outbound trip in business and Qantas points for inbound trip in economy. Sure QF128 is a nightime flight but I can sleep easily in 43H bulkhead and I'm not wasting points for business class to sleep through the flight.

But in saying that I have been exploring the EK flights into SiN and KUL. I like the idea of a full days work in Brisbane and then overnight flight arriving SIN/KUL at ~8:00am with a whole day to get to BKK/CNX.

Like you I love the B747, I purchased an affordable ticket to HND return with QF on their B747 with double points sweetener in October for my annual trip to Osaka, which I will complete with JL from HND. Overnight, but not much I could do, I just hope they have Sake to help me rest a little, and I hope for a not fully booked aircraft!! Oh, if it was only J, on my favourite plane. I suppose they have refreshed the J cabin by this?
