Last night I looked at various dates for a trip and then booked 2 seats Cairns to Hong Kong return. I'm the Qantas FF wife is not.

Going into the booking I pressed one seat only (should have been 2) up came Business Class (one way return) and its available, went back clicked on 2 seats and its not there anymore, went back to one seat and sure enough its available. Our 2 friends (both Q FF) booked theirs for same trip while here, but did it separately, both had BC available.

So why is it that I couldn't get the BC booking?.

Because there is only 1 business class award seat available on that flight. Another may become available later, but there is no assurance that will happen.

Since CNS-HKG is operated by Cathay Pacific and not by Qantas, there is no point in even asking Qantas to consider a request to release another seat (though they have reportedly ceased doing that even for Platinum FF members).

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

NM, just to clarify, this has only ceased for domestic economy. Everything else can still be requested (for QF marked and operated flights).

Thanks for clarifying. I had not heard that clarification before.

The return CX flight CNS/HKG is via Brisbane, just realised we could have come SYD/CNS and there are Bus. Class seats available and it arrives an hour earlier too, clicked the wrong flight when I booked, don't know if its possible to change this now??.

Do note that the CX flights to/from BNE (including CNS) use their regional A330 aircraft configuration. These aircraft do not have the lie-flat business class setas, but are more like the QF Dreamtime seats.

So I guess the Sydney flight use the same aircaft?.

Do you tink there is any chnace of changing the flight via Sydney?.

No, CX flights to/from SYD and MEL use their long-haul configuration aircraft with the lie-flat business class seats.

Thanks for the info.

If unable to change our existing flight from Economy to BC we do have 2 CX upgrade vouchers that can be used in either direction, but very doubtfull these will work out of HK as they are to be ulitised at check in, and its to easy for them to say no BC is availble even if there are seats. A Travel Agent friend said ask them if there are any BC seats first, if so then present the upgrade voucher.

Was in HK 2 months ago, due to direct return flight being over booked got shoved onto a different flight back to CNS via SYD, spent 1/2 hour protesting it wasn't good enough, eventually they caved in, received the upgrade offer and a swag of other goodies, wife received the same too, we arrived back to CNS 11 hours late.

If award seats are available Syd-hkg, you can rebook. I think there is a 5000 points per person alteration fee.

Where on the Q FF site is this done I couldn't find it.

You are effectively cancelling one booking and making another. The 5000 point fee is the cancellation fee for the original booking.

Does that 5000 points apply even if its only one way?.

Is that 5000 points each? as I booked both flights on my FF membership.

Doesn't matter how many flights are in the booking.
5000 points per person, per booking.
