Hi

I am relatively new to the world of aviation travel and I have the opportunity of flying either Domestic Qantas Business or Economy. I will have to pay a small premium to fly Business, however I was wondering what you can get away with asking for in Business that you would not in economy.

ie. Toiletries, Headphones, Extra alcohol, Small model planes, Souvenirs, Blankets etc.

Would like to hear peoples experiences and thoughts.

Thanks!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but a slighly nicer meal served on a real place, a bit of alcohol and extra space is about all you'll get in J Domestic over Y Domestic.

Pretty much what is offered on Qantas Domestic Business is explained here:

Fly - Travel Classes - Domestic Business

Flying long haul International does give some more leverage for a better experience (eg pj's in J, an amenities kit and noise cancelling headphones on loan), but these are not offered on domestic flights.

There is an open bar though with plenty to drink.

Unless you're going one of the long DOM flights, such as PER-SYD, then it's not worth it in my opinion, except of course if someone else is paying, and then it is vital.

But - no toiletries, no flash headphones, no jacuzzi in the corner or dancing girls for the after meal show.

If you're lucky you'll get a friendly crew and an edible meal on real china. You'll get a pretty good selection of alcohol. But you'll also get access to the lounge.

How regularly do you plan to fly and what is the premium amount?

If you plan to fly the route regularly then you quickly earn status and more points which then allow you to access the First class lounge when travelling internationally and extra luggage allowances.

Also flying business gets you express checkin and access to the Qantas club - again great for regular travellers.

I will have to pay a small premium to fly Business, however I was wondering what you can get away with asking for in Business that you would not in economy.

If the premium is small, then do it for the points & SCs.

In addition to what has already been mentioned regarding meal, beverages and space:
  • Access to the Business Class lounge
  • Priority check-in
  • Priority checked baggage handling
  • Faster to get off the aircraft on arrival
  • 25% bonus FF points
  • 100-200% increased status credits earning rate
The value of these things is going to vary between people. Only you can decide if these things are worth the extra cost.
