I was looking to book a business class ticket to SIN using my UA miles when I noticed that going via DPS was 15,000 miles less than direct (40,000 vs 55,000).

So I booked SYD-DPS (VA) + DPS-SIN (SQ 789), with an overnight stopover. I wasn't in a great hurry to get to SIN, and I thought it would be fun to have a night in a decent hotel in Kuta, and save 10,000 miles in the process. There were also options via DPS to arrive SIN same day, but for me, that was too much hassle.

So UA's arrangement with VA has brought some improved choices for International awards (not to mention some cheaper domestic awards).

VA 737 is a deal breaker for me but I agree this UA/VA arrangement is good for us especially these days when award seats are so rare at short notice.
