Nice fallback for some. Others are still working towards it.
It took a lot of time and BIS hours to make the milestone. But the benefits are a significant improvement over Lifeline Sliver.

I have read all this and i am still lost I QF Plat and since ansett went broke swapped to qf which i now hve just QF silver lifetime i do it the hard way all in discount economy average 1600 SC per year. So that took me 5 years to get to QF lifetime silver. Upgrade where poss!!
So for me wld there be an advantage to join AA. I mainly travel to asia and europe.

I suggest you go back through your travel records of the last 6 or 12 months and see what you would have earned if using AA. Note that you cannot upgrade QF flights using AA miles, but in many cases it costs about the same number of AA miles for a full award flight in business class as it costs in QF points to upgrade from discount economy to business class. An award flight may not be an option for some people where employers pay for the flights, and award seats need to be available when you want to travel, so its not always a practical alternative.

There is a fair bit of discussion in this thread on this ...

You are in a similar situation as me. My plan is to spend the year or three that I need to earn the remaining 5¾K SC's I need for QF LTG crediting to QFF.

Once I achieve that goal I will then re-assess my options; all things being equal, AA should become a lot more interesting for me.

Ouch! I thought my 50 discount economy QF flights in the past 4 1/2 months were bad. Congrats on lifetime silver.

NM I had a look I would over the year qualify for AA Platinum easily. The thing for me i guess i don't fly to the usa to use the upgrade with ppts where as i can with qf whatever the cost. I am self employed so i choose where and when and how much thats why i guess i go eco disc and try to upgrade.
I think I may stick with Qf but i will swap to AA if in travel in usa increases.

Even if travel to the US increases, I would suggest sticking with QFF until achieve LTG is achieved. If nothing changes, you then will not have the AC access issue that is being discussed here: Discounted AC membership.

Fair enough. Everyone's situation will be different. Hopefully we have provided enough info to allow you to mae your own decision from a position of knowledge.

I maintain my QF account to use for upgrades. But most of my travel these days is long-haul international and for those trips I generally use DONE4 fares. So that means I am upgrading QF flights from Business to First when I can. So AA domestic upgrades are of little use to me either. But I have made good use of the better value awards.

If I was in a position where I was doing a lot of economy travel on QF international flights, I would want to know I can maintain enough points flow (credit card??) into the account to pay for the upgrades, and to maintain enough status in their program to be far enough up the upgrade waitlist to make a difference.

kiwi flyer maybe u work for yrself and try to save money

i can't bring myself to pay 1200 bucks for J darwin to adl one way just can't do it, but overseas travel say jal 5500rtn aussie to london in business i can, 24 hrs versus 3/12 hrs plus flat bed

it works out say 48 hrs return on jal at 115 bucks an hour 5500 divided by 48 where as 7 hours in a lame domestic business class seat at 345 an hour with no where near the facilties.

i think economy if u get the right seat on domestic is fine just behind business class on the 737400 or exit row on the 737800.

thought i'd get that off my chest!!

The reason I was happy to jump onm the AA band wagon is that when I switched I only had about 1700 LT SC's so LTG was a long way off. In retrospect if I had known about my current travel plans for late 2006 and 2007 (maybe about 4500 SCs in a 14 month period) I might have considered differently - I would be very close to LTS in one year alone. But at the time it was the right decision and when I get on a plane netx year with mrssimongr it will be the right choice. Although I have done my fare share of bleating about AC access I still feel its a great choice for someone like me with little long term investment in QF and lots of J/F Int'l travel paid for by the shareholders :)
