British Airways (BA) will use service-oriented architecture (SOA) to integrate over 600 passenger and airport systems in a major IT update.

The project will last until the end of 2014 and aims to bring new products to market faster and reduce cost.

“BA's goal is to transform the travel experience. The flexibility of the SOA [tools] allows BA to extend the features of its e-commerce site right through to its airports, by allowing greater self-service functionality and 'plug and play' capability," explained the airline’s chief technology officer Gordon Penfold.

Wow that will be a massive expense! I am surprised that they can even think of affording SOA when they are perceived to be close to bankruptcy...

One can assume that the cost benefit analysis has indicated significant savings in the forseeable future. You can imagine the massive amount of resources that would be required in maintaining and supporting 600 seperate systems.

I envisage a number of redundancies will come once those 600 seperate systems come offline.

I am not sure that SOA will take these apps off line - more that they will work better together.
