British Airways Crew Plays Emergency Message By Mistake, Scaring Passengers

Mistakes do happen but that is one announcement I hope I never to hear in the air.

Unless one has had special training wouldn't panic be the natural reaction in those circumstances?

I guess it depends on the people on board - from what I can make out of crowds that are panicked is that it starts off with a small number of people then quickly spreads. If no-one starts it, then things can remain reasonable calm.

I am just thinking about it, it seems that a perfectly worded announcement from up the front can keep the calm much better than a pre-recorded message can, just as much as a poorly worded announcement can stir up a riot.

No easy solution to this one I guess

We all like to think we wouldn't panic under pressure, but having the crew serving drinks then a wrong button pushed for an announcement telling you if you survive the next 100 seconds you might need your life jacket might just do it.

Agreed - but potentially the issue is that the smooth, silver-haired gentleman up front, may have his mind on other things rather than trying to craft the perfect sentence. Like, perhaps, keeping the plane flying:!:
