Greetings,

Long time lurker, discovered this forum during "university exam study period" made for very happy browsing and lots of procrastination!

Just graduated and have moved up to Brisbane for work.

Have booked around 9 Brisbane - Melbourne return flights on Qantas during their sales last year

Just gone on my profile and their is an upgrade for 12,000 points link. Is this worth the points?

I am assuming that if I upgrade, then I will be upgrading as a Classic Award ticket?

So no status credits or points earned?

As these are all Red-Deal fares, and eligible for points and status credits will I earn anything if I upgrade to business or just end up with a seat and 12,000 points short?

Thanks again frequent flyers!

You dont earn any extra points or SCs upgrading, so its up to you to workout if its worth it, the points needed are the same as 1/2 of the points needed for an anyseat award that would get you points and SCs at J level, I would use them for that but each to their own.

It really comes down to how much you value FF points, how easy it is for you to earn them and what other uses you could put them to. Also what benefits you can get from business class.

It also depends on your status. As a platinum I already receive many of the benefits of business class such as premium boarding, premium security, lounge access and increased baggage allowance. So for me all business class on that route is just a nicer meal and a slightly wider seat. Because of this it does not seem good value for the points and I never seek an upgrade on points.

Points upgrades on that route seem to be quite popular. I have spoken to other passengers who sought ODUs and missed out. Often the business section is full at peak times. So for some people it is good value for points.

Assuming you are bronze or silver then business is probably more valuable for you. For instance you might have quite a bit of luggage if you are relocating so the excess baggage allowance of business can come in handy.

Also if you have never been in business class before or have a special event to celebrate it can be good to use it for a one off.

If you do get an upgrade on points you will earn status credits and points at the rate of the original fare.

To be clear; if you upgrade you are still eligible for points and SC's in line with the orginal booking.

i.e. MEL-BNE booked in discount economy earns a Bronze member 1000* QFF points and 15SC's.

If you upgrade to Business class you should still earn those 1000* QFF points and 15SC's.

* 859 Miles, min point earn is 1000.
