Brisbane hotels - poor overall?

We also liked the traveling Santas on the lifts :)

I was having drinks with friends at the H ground bar a couple of weeks ago, and we were commenting on them - they do look good. But I'm pretty sure H has used them over the last 3 years or so, certainly I've remembered seeing them before.

I fail to understand this comment. Are you referring to the people or the properties available?

Personally I don't want to throw away my money on an overpriced room for the night. Choice in how to spend money does not determine the level of sophistication. Quite the contrary....

There are alot of comments lamenting the lack of luxury properties and a lack of willingness to supply, (even if it is to stimulate demand) yet there is the highest (as quoted by markis10) occupancy rate in the country.

A strong market not demanding better supply for it's efforts and the suppliers not exactly anticipating shift in demand to higher grade properties.

Unsophisticated? Quite possibly.

The only reasons BNE hotels command the rates they do is because of undersupply. Since the Stamford was evacuated due to the Jan flooding, it'll be interesting to see how the renovations go although I imagine nothing is being doen to the rooms. Personally, I'd opt for the Marriott or the Emporium in the Valley. Everything else is just plain staid.

Relief is in sight, the Mariott is expanding.........its adding, wait for it, wait, 23 rooms, yes I did not miss a digit!

Marriott Hotel Brisbane to Expand

having the Stamford reopening last week (having been **** for 16 weeks) thanks to flood damage adds back far more rooms than that.

23? Barely worth the effort one would think! The glass does look out of place.

Last week I stayed at the Limes in the Valley... it's boutique and modern, and I felt it was nice to get away from the big chains and experience something different. The rooms are quite long and narrow, so not much room. As a solo traveller, it would be perfect in terms of size. Free wireless with good speed, a good bar on the roof with great music and Nespresso machine make this place quite trendy. Great for GenY's as its close to the Valley action - easy to stumble back to the hotel when your written off

The problem existed before the floods, the Mariott was the last CBD hotel to be bought online over 11years ago, with the Westin dead it will be sometime before we see completely new inventory. There has been apartment hotels but no traditional hotels.

Haha I would put the mariott firmly in the 'staid' bucket!

Limes isn't bad at all. Their rooftop bar has seen quite a few incidents of Taez in a happy glow. Rooms are narrow, but you aren't "hanging out" in them. With Green Square, The Valley, China Town, and Them Emporium all within v close walking distance it is the one I refer all my friends to.

Will also add The Emporium as a good choice.

Reasonably funky - sort of aloft like.
Mini kitchen in every room and a nice rooftop pool

Are you sure markis10. I would have thought the Sebel (I think, cnr Albert & Charlotte I believe) is less than 10- but I am so rarely in the City these days.

I have to agree that BNE is in need of some hotel infrastructure spending but don't see any on the horizon.

The only place I'd stay would be the Hilton (central location, decent decent rooms, great Exec Floor lounge and eStandby upgrades - god I love them!)

I'm pretty sure the Sebel building has been there as a hotel of one brand or another for a long time.

When I was in BNE recently I stayed at the Oaks Festival towers serviced apartments on the corner of Albert and Charlotte St's ,I must say I was very impressed, although it isn't a 5 star hotel and obviously doesn't have things like mini bar I found it very good, the apartments are well appointed with full kitchenette facilities including oven, fridge, microwave, kettle etc,the rooms were serviced daily and the beds are comfortable, for 7 nights I paid just over $800.00 and I would happily stay there again, staff are friendly and it's close to good pubs and the mall.
Would recommend.
Cheers
