Brisbane Airport begins $5 billion makeover to improve usability, sustainability, capacity ahead of Olympic Games

The new security screening portion of the project is due to be completed by the end of 2025 — due to upgraded standards set by the Australian government — and will allow passengers to keep most of their items in their bags.

A new mezzanine level will connect to the skywalk and allow passengers, who have already checked in online and are travelling only with carry-on baggage, to walk straight from the carpark to security screening.

The airport will also see a much-needed upgrade to its baggage system, with the current systems merging into one to streamline the check-in and baggage claim process for passengers.

Mr de Graff said it would be an incredible improvement for both travellers and staff working in the baggage areas.

"Currently our baggage system consists of three different systems and they're not talking to each other," he said.

One thing I was a little disappointed with was a lack of addressing the complete fustercluck that is the passenger drop off/pick up area at the Domestic Terminal. It's currently incredibly inefficient and, with the proposed increase in pax over the next couple of years, only going to get worse.

Furthermore, if you have a look at the latest schematic for the proposed Terminal 3, it actually now has the drop off/pick up traffic for T3 funnelling through the existing choke points on the road to the Domestic Terminal. Surely that can't be right?

Also interesting that T3 doesn't have its own car park. I know the 2020 Master Plan called for a Mass Transit loop to be built (see map here) which would mean that both pax drop off and parking could be moved to somewhere near the Central Parking Area, but that's not in the latest release from the weekend (Future BNE).

Perhaps they should also upgrade this potential disaster reported by friends yesterday.

Seconds from disaster at the Domestic Terminal tonight... (serious post) (from friend)

I was picking up a family member at the domestic terminal tonight at 6:20pm. The airport was super busy. For some reason, one of the exits from the arrivals hall for Qantas and Jetstar that takes you down to the baggage carousel was closed. Everyone was funnelled past the shops to the next one.
This particular exit has stairs and an escalator down to those 2 one-way security doors/corridor combos. The problem was that one of the security doors was out of order. Everyone had to go through the remaining door, but its capacity was not enough to handle the people coming down the stairs AND the escalator. A crowd started to form and quickly grew, preventing people from getting off the escalator. People were suddenly forced to walk back up the escalator, but it was futile, since it was at capacity
I yelled out for someone to hit the emergency stop and tried to find the button at the bottom, but couldn't readily see it.
Through some miracle, with a lot of squeezing and people being aware of what was happening and coinciding with fewer people coming down the escalator, a terrible situation was narrowly avoided.
This photo was taken in anticipation of the problem. This was taken about 5 seconds before things started getting ugly. You can already see the people struggling for space.
Once through security, I reported it but I was not convinced that the magnitude of the situation was appreciated.
And to top it off, we were there for about 30 min and got charged $26 for parking.
