John, that building is on Wickham Terrace, Spring Hill, which is about a 5 minute walk to Central station, or maybe a few minutes more to Roma Street Station.
Probably better off going to Roma St as it is only 3 stops away from Toowong but Central would also be OK as long as I do not have to change platforms to get to Toowong.

I believe it is the Tower Mill Metro building.
I stayed there 4 years ago and it was not too bad. From what I understand when speaking to the property manager these rooms are a little small so may not be the same as the ones available through the hotel. Anyway I like the area and I think this place suits if the room looks OK. Can't expect too much for that sort of price though.

DOnt miss the free happy hour for guests in MJ's (HI Bar) on Thursday, should be a placard in your room but from memory is 5-6 or 6-7PM! Includes Beer/Wine and Spirits for free!
Thanks. Sounds good.

You would be lucky to have more than a 5 minute walk from that local to Roma st BTW, its downhill to the station too, google earth shows it as 600 ft as the crow flies!
If it is downhill to the station then it must be uphill coming back from the station. :-|

All trains stop at both Central and Roma St, so you just need to catch the right train (Ipswich line from memory to Toowong)

Spring Hill is surprisingly enough on a hill above the CBD. Not too bad though - although I believe the walk up from central would be a lot better than the walk up from Roma St. The stairs from Roma St Parklands are pretty steep!

There are other options too, including walking down stairs at Central into a walkway, catching a lift up to level 4 (I think), and then you are a short walk up a minor gradient to where you're looking at staying.

Sorry I missed this update JohnK - been offline since 25 June (the joys of FY end).

You are much better off going to Central Station from the Tower Mill on Wickham Terrace, rather than the extra walk around to Roma Street. Mal's details were perfect. You'll see the extra distance to walk to Roms Street Station if you are staying at the Hiliday Inn (as it's directly next to the Transit Centre and Roma Street Station).

Sorry, can't catch up for drinks - yesterday was in Tweed Heads and Gold Coast only got back 7pm last night (and hadn't read the update). Can't catch up today, have babysitting duties tonight for mini-LW.

Considering you'll be in the same suburb (I work in Spring Hill), I'm sure we'll catch up.

Yes I think you are right. It would be much easier to get to Central.

I just haven't quite decided on a place yet. I think it is best if I thought about it for a few days at least before rushing a 6 months lease.

No problem. Mal and I more than made up for any AFFers during happy hour and with some 2 for 1 drink vouchers plus a few more shouts and a final free drink from MJs for being a great customer I was feeling real sick when I woke up before 5:00am this morning.

I must remember not to book early flights....

Yep, it was good to catch up, and the staff were very friendly at the Holiday Inn. Was wondering how you'd get on with your flight! I was at work by 7:40 this morning, so it was a quiet and slow morning for me too.

HI BNE staff are very nice, almost rank the hotel up with HI Flinders, stayed there at weekend on a 5K point break and scored a Corner king room upgrade, and the locale is not too bad, the subway opposite is a popular choice for the backpackers for breakfast :p.

Indeed!

The duty manager (I think, not really sure) at MJ's was a very nice lady who walked around the tables to ask if you were staying at the hotel, and to advise that there were free drinks for hotel guests between 6 and 7 if you were.

She later brought around nibblies (potato wedges, spring rolls etc) and even asked what you were drinking and brought refills at various times.

Very good service from the hotel. Their beer on tap was a good selection (Carlton Draught, Cascade Light, VB, Pure Blonde and numerous others that I can't recall). It's a nice bar that I'll have to keep in mind as a place to head to.

I agree that HI Brisbane staff are mostly very friendly and helpful. As for the subway across the road the less said the better, especially for a late night snack....

I may be staying at the HI again this Thursday but will seriously need to consider the alcohol consumption during happy hour and buy 1 get 1 free promotions considering it will only be my first week of work.

Today I signed a 6 months lease on a unit in Wickham Terrace, Spring Hills. Spent a couple of hours cleaning up and checking inventory and I think I made the right decision.

I have managed to get through my first week of work in Brisbane. Time will tell whether this move will be a success. Hopefully it will all work out.

By the way would I be classed as a Sydneysider or Brisbanite now that I am splitting my time between Sydney and Brisbane? If any BNE locals are interested in having a drink occassionally please get in touch with me. It will help me settle in to this country town a lot quicker....

Congratulations JohnK :!:

I think you will still be defined as a Sydneysider though I also think that you'll enjoy the country town after the big smoke. ;)

Congrats on the job and the lease in Spring Hill. In case you're wondering .. I think your nearest grocery shops are either located in Upper/Little Edward St (small convenience type stores), or the Coles at the bottom of Queens Plaza (Cnr Adelaide and Edward). I think everything else should be straightforward - if you have any locality questions, send me a PM as I know the area well.

Often up for a drink or three, just not nights when I have to work the next morning :) Send me a PM as well, and we'll arrange a drink at one of the huge number of local bars/pubs in the near vicinity!

Country town; don't be silly. :p

Which team do you support in the state of origin. That is your answer.

Always up for a drink; but that takes a bit of planning. Probably not in the next 3 weeks or so; but I will send PM.

MORE importantly, in what state is your GOLF handicap sourced ...

... the answer lays within ...

I agree on the local convenience stores. I passed by them on the way to the bottle shop the other day.

There is also a Coles and Woolworths right next to work at Toowong so I can always buy a small amount of things daily and keep them fresh.

I was at Holiday Inn again yesterday for happy hour and our friend was not happy at all. I managed to consume 7 Pure Blondes in the 1 hour which beats our previous weeks record.

I have never seen a grumpier service person in my life. He is so rude. I may actually send an email to Holiday Inn or even call them.

There appears to be a very nice bar/restaurant in my building. Will give it a try one of these days.

I do not support anyone in the state of origin but hate it when Queensland wins. More importantly the team I support is leading the NRL and may go one better this year.

Still a member of Bardwell Valley Golf Club in Sydney....

JohnK, welcome to the Sunshine State - a temporary resident so I'd still classify yuo as a Sydney-sider.

Looks like you've sussed out the local Coles. There is also a Woolworths down on the corner of Wharf and Turbot Street (Wickham Tce feeds into Turbot Street at the bottom, turn left and it's a block and a half down on the RHS at the lights).

I'll be in for a drink, but won't be until at least 11th August - as I'm off to PER and BME on Sun for 3 days [work too!], then come back for 2 days work, then leaving for 2 weeks hols in Fiji.
