dear all,

a friend of my will be carrying 10 badminton racquets when he return from a trip in the not too distant future.

the total purchase for the 10 items are around AUD $300. he will NOT be claiming duty free on the purchase when he leave that country.

question, will he have an issue in getting the 10 items past custom? provided he has kept the purchase receipt for the items. i should think not, but thought i'd better get a concensus from everyone just in case.

thank you

ioki

To be certain he wont have problems get them checked on the way out using a goods exported in passenger baggage form for total piece of mind. Having a receipt may not be enought proof for goods that dont have serial numbers noted on the sale document.

I doubt there will be any problems when it is only $300 anyway.

It's unclear from your post where the badminton raquets were purchased. If they are purchased overseas, it is irrelevant whether tax/duty was paid on them in another country -- the only issue is what their value is when they arrive in Australia. If the total of new items being brought into the country exceeds the free limit for private use, then tax/duty must be paid. If the badminton raquets are purchased overseas and are intended for commercial use (sale), then the rules are completely different, to my knowledge -- and the number of raquets will certainly make it look like they could be intended for commercial use.

If the raquets were bought in Aus and are leaving Aus with your friend and then returning with your friend, then markis10's suggestion is the solution.

the goods will be purchased outside of australia.

the current project count for raquets are seven...

what is the "limit" before it start to look like for commercial purposes?

I doubt there's anything official. Depends what the officer feels like on the day.

If for example the rackets are top quality and you can convince officer you play competitively then maybe can get away with more than regular joe.
