Just out of interest, when was the last time you were asked for one? Am
on a JQi from Melb to SYD and was wondering if I could sneak some Absolut through (which I find is cheaper than DM's). Worst case scenario I get hit with 10% tax right?

Err no, there is a lot more tax on booze than GST, and if your caught penalties apply that basically mean its better to surrender your booze and get a note on your record to have cavity searches for the next 15 years every time you pass through border control. Oh, and you might get to be a star on TV.

But I for one can't remember the last time I was asked for a BP at inbound DF nor can I see a reason why the customs people (who are separate from immi) would want to search. Perhaps am overthinking a $20 discount ....

There are around 500 cameras in arrivals including in the store, and someone trying to conceal a duty free package they just bought is going to raise flags regardless of whether they have a Boarding pass or not, for all customs knows you are over your limit. If you dont try to conceal it, they are going to wonder why a D sticker has a Syd DF bag.....

Given specials at times often mean Dans etc can come close, why would you risk it!

it might be that the request for a boarding pass is flight specific? so when the JQ flight lands they might ask to see BPs more routinely?

i haven't been asked for one in MEL for a while, but the only flights arriving have been pure international.
