Booster vaccines, eligibility and travel bookings

My wife and I received our 2nd vaccine dose on 15 July this year and the Govt has announced eligibility for booster shots as 6 momths from your second dose. This would make us eligible from 15 January 2022 and we live in NSW.

However we have a trip to Canada booked to depart 13 January. Regardless of Canada’s inbound passenger rules around boosters we’d much prefer the protection of a booster while traveling abroad.

Does anyone know if boosters will be allowed under these kind of circumstances?

I called the National Covid Hotline and they weren’t able to advise (other than “check back later”)

I’m hoping my GP may allow it (I’ll ask him today) but the other potential issue is whether our records in the national immunisation register will be able to be updated if the time period of 3rd (booster) dose is less than 6 months.

Thanks in advance if anyone knows the answer!

My wife and I had our second shots on June 15th and June 17th. I've got my booster booked in for December 15th, however she is flying to the UK on December 28th and would like the booster to have had time to take effect especially since she had AstraZeneca for the first two shots, so she is booked in for December 8th, which is 9 days before she is supposed to have it. Having said that, she does work for NSW Health at one of their vaccine centres and is good friends with the vaccination centre manager, but apparently it is possible to bring forward your booster if you will be travelling.

I would also like to know this. I received my last vaccine dose in August and am planning to travel to Europe (for ~4 months) in January.

It is pretty much inevitable that I will be exposed to COVID-19 at some point while I am overseas, so I would prefer to get a booster before I go.

Update: I was able to book at booster appointment at my local GP for the first week of Jan, around 9 days before we travel. Hooray.

Basically they are allowed to do this for travel reasons, so others should be offered the same option.

FWIW they also suggested getting an updated flu jab for the northern hemisphere strain, so that’s booked in for late Dec as you need 2 weeks between vaccines.

Thanks for everyone’s input.

Some more info here about boosters from SA Health

The TGA approval is for a third dose six months or more after the second.

So anyone administering a third dose before the six months is technically leaving themselves open to legal liability.

Huh? HCP’s are allowed to administer almost any drug off label. It is their prerogative. Hence many HCP’s boosted themselves before the agencies woke up to provide the guidance.

At our hospital they have a policy of anything over 4 months they will do. But they prefer 6 months if possible.

And some GPs are happy with 4 months. The Clinic where I had the 2 x AZ, the second being five-months ago, texted me last week to come in for the Pfizer booster shot.

Also received mine at about 5 months. Combination of traveling overseas and the doctor getting ready to throw out 500 Pfizer doses.

Does the booster give you any side effects ? Pfizer .
I would presume it would. And certainly there is the worry about myocarditis.

The CDC is now recommending booster doses of both Moderna and J&J as well as Pfizer.Again pointing out that after a J&J jab the Moderna booster gives ~ twice the antibody rise as Pfizer.
They also approved mix and match boosters.

I'm due for my boost mid December and will be getting Pfizer since for the moment that is the only option here. I'll look at getting Moderna or Novavax for future boosters.

I’m thinking I will get Moderna booster…I’m going to sit down with my medical family and get them to review the data with me.

Dear Dr Ron , are you a medical Dr ?

Is the pfizer Vaz known to cause myocarditis ? Are the side effects on the booster known / likely to be worse than those on the first shot ? Thanks in advance .

My research (in the toilet, on the iphone) makes me think that I’d really prefer AZ. Or is that just me being different.

Yes I am.
Both Pfizer and Moderna are known to cause myocarditis/pericarditis but like the clots with AZ it is rare.

The booster obviously has the ability to cause the same side effects as the first 2 jabs. But the booster is a reduced dosage so may be less.On the other hand side effects are usually worse with the second jab than the first so we have to wait until the real world experience is known.
