Booking QFF tix and travelling with paid tix

I'm planning to book a trip for my wife and myself from PER SYD CNS.

I want to pay for her ticket so that she reaches WP, but I want to book my ticket as an award ticket.

What procedure should I use?

I'm guessing I should book my QFF award ticket first, then book her paid ticket on the same flight.

Any other catches to look out for? How can we sit together on the same flight? I heard that you can link booking refs together? Will it matter that mine is an award tix and hers is paid for?

Also, is it worth using 72k pts to get the taxes included? or 54k pts and pay extra for the taxes.

I'm a little unsure about linking the bookings together although I did try this earlier in the year. The QFF staff member was quite unhelpful and moaned at how difficult it was to add an information sector to a booking that a friend and I were travelling together on separate itineraries.

RE, seating together I have done on many occasions where my travel partner and I have travelled on different PNR's. At checkin, the QF staff will simply allocate seats together. On a flight that isn't full, you will normally keep your own seats that have been assigned based on status, but on flights that are full you may need to move further back as the middle seat will have been allocated and you will be moved into the best seats available together.

As for taxes, unless you have oodles of points, I would pay for the taxes with cash and keep the points for an upgrade to J on a later flight. Again though, this is a case of what suits you personally.

The problem with J is there are less seats to move around; the trick is to get the pre-allocation to seat you together, this can saves those hassles later.

Get the award ticketed first, then buy the Accompanying travel. When you have both PNR references, call Qantas.

It's not an 'information segment' that's required; the booking needs to have a TCP* applied to them. This should be done to both bookings so they are cross linked.

(FWIW, don't refer to OLCI when you make the call, this might confuse the issue with some agents.)

* IIRC, TCP is short for "Total (and) Complete Party".
