We are planning a ski trip to Queenstown for September - myself, Mrs Shano and the two mini-Shano's.

The two mini's do not have passports and Mrs Shano's has expired - application are underway for new passports.

We are also going with some friends who have booked flights over on NZ.

I went to the AirNZ site to book flights and passport information is requested for all travelers.

Is it possible to book the tickets now (I am guessing this would have to be a telephone booking) and advise of passport details once these have been obtained?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I know it requests them, but IIRC you could leave them blank (I.e. they were not required).

You can book on Pacific Blue and Qantas without Passport Info.
Air NZ and Emirates require it.

Alternativly if you have the time to book via Travel Agency should be no problems not having the passport info.

Put some dummy but acceptable information in if you have to, then call to change when you have the new ones.

Not really to do with the issue of passport details, but my family is going to Queenstown over June-July and when we were comparing flights noticed that AirNZ still requires you to pay a large fuel surcharge but other airlines (Qantas, Virgin) do not.

To us, the additional fees on top of an AirNZ ticket just seemed over the top.

Having made the trip before, if you're looking for good deals, sometimes the airlines offer seasonal fares closer to the date that aren't available to book now.

We'll be flying via Sydney (from BNE) to Queenstown this year for just under $500 on Qantas.

It's funny to read of your situation being exactly the same as mine regarding passports. The mini-Warks don't have passports and Mrs Warks' passport expired years ago. Mine expires next year.
Just booked our flights to the US in September and luckily there was no requirement for passport numbers. However, once booked there is a requirement to fill in more information for the US. I started doing it but gave up. I'm guessing it's to do with the visa waiver so I guess I've got plenty of time.
Got the passport applications! Just a matter of the rest of the run-around. $208 for a passport!!(half for kids)

Thanks for suggestions.

I did a dummy booking for myself leaving out passport details and it allows me through to the payment section, so looks like this should work for all of us.

I'll do the online booking today and when passport details are obtained can always ring NZ and give them this information.

This will be our first ski trip. We are away for 8 days but will only half the time skiing - as that is about all my body will be able to take.

Any suggestions for other things to do / see around Queenstown?

When I've had to book other passengers on my flight and I don't have their passport details (EK and NZ....and maybe LA) I just put in false info such as Passport# AA11111.

Never had an issue.

It depends how much of an adrenalin junkie you are! There's skydiving, canyon swings, bungee jumping etc. but if it's the kids you also have in mind, there's some great tours that you can do also. I did a walk/jetboat tour that incorporated small sections of LOTR.

There's lots to do, for your skiing the best place to go as I'm sure you may already be aware is Coronet Peak, as it's really easy to get to and has some easy runs with good access. However if you find it's too busy don't discount The Remarkables, which is owned by the same company, and while it takes 10 - 20 minutes longer to get up the mountain and has some harder runs, has just as many places to learn and is a little less busy (easier to get a table for a family around lunch time).

The Shotover Jet is quite an experience, and depending on how old your kids are they should be able to go on it.

Many operators will take you to sites of LOTR. The best one IMHO is Nomad Safaris, they take you in a Land Rover 4WD through rivers and up steep slopes to show you some spectacular but hidden away areas.

Definitely go to on the Skyline Gondola to the complex above Queenstown. I wouldn't eat up there, but there's a luge that's quite good fun for kids and adults and if you're feeling adventurous enough could do some para-penting from there (much easier than jumping out of a plane).

If you're only there for 8 days remember there are lots of nice restaurants to go to. You probably wont be able to hit them all, but if you can find a babysitter for the kids one night there are some very good places to eat out. And of course some cool bars too.

I go every year.
