Rookie question: can I not book 2 friends as cash seats and myself as a points seat in the same booking? Looking at Sydney-LAX return. So I have to do my points booking separate to their cash booking? What happens with seat allocations in this instance?

Thanks in advance

Bookings would need to be separate. Once you have made the bookings you can call up and get the bookings linked. If you have status then you can try and get everyone seated together. If no status then you can either pay for allocating seats or wait until seat allocations are done a few days before the flight and you should all be seated together.

If the bookings were to be separate, call and ask for the bookings to have the TCP between the bookings. Whilst you won't be able to see the other booking in your MMB, it will have the TCP link in the back end, which will help with seat selection.

I have done this several times - two "screens" or "tabs" up separately, paid in one, points in the other so that I am sure we are on the same flight. Then as others have said, have the two bookings linked by QF so that come online checkin they come up together. Obviously if seat selection is done at the time of booking, you have to do it separately for each one. Again the 2 tabs allow you to synchronise seat selections.
