Book a flight and Extend Current status to 2022

Received an email but indicates they count me as a domestic resident. Have tried reaching out via Twitter to see how to notify them myself and family have been based overseas for a number of years, haven't heard back as yet. Any ideas?

Yes its an Australian based mailing address as I'm in PNG and the mail system here isn't what I would call functional. Figured that's what it might be based on.

If you've got any proof of residence for PNG I think you've got a strong case. Worth emailing [email protected] to ask if changing your mailing address now would be sufficient.

If that doesn't get anywhere, you could go down the speculative route cancellation option with a classic award such as:

I'd say there's a very good chance this flight gets cancelled given Joyce's comments this week about only vaccinated travellers being able to fly on QFi. The upward spike in cases in Japan right now and significant lack of testing means there's unlikely to be a bubble on the horizon, but if a bubble were announced, I think QF would be more likely to run SYD-HND and MEL-HND flights until there's sufficient demand to justify BNE-NRT. My 2c anyway.

Assuming the flight is cancelled, you'd then be eligible for the extension based on:

If the booking is cancelled, will my status still be extended?
If you’ve made a booking in line with the requirements and Qantas cancels the flight you’ve booked, then yes we will still extend your status.

The only downside to this approach is tying up 25k points and $145 taxes until Qantas cancels the flight, then waiting 3 months for a refund.

There is a risk that the flight goes ahead, in which case you'd need to cancel it the day before departure with a penalty of 6k points. The rest of the points and taxes would still be refunded.

There may be other QFi routes which are more likely to get cancelled, this is just an example. The key seems to be finding something in April which is still bookable.

If this is for the travel pass from what I can see they are deemed to be "Bonus" and will not roll.

The travel pass has: "You’ve chosen to earn double Status Credits on eligible flights* for all passengers booked when using your Qantas TravelPass" and the Asterix "This offer is valid when you make a new Eligible Flight booking between 12.01am (AEST) 1 September 2020 and 11.59pm (AEDT) 31 December 2022."

Sorry, I assumed your DSC was from the last generally available DSC offer in which case you needed to fly prior to Feb-14. 2021 in order to obtain the DSC. If you were planning to not fly until 2022 then you would not have earned the DSC (under the original terms) ... nothing to do with roll-over of SCs.

Can Classic reward bookings be cancelled on the same day prior to departure without forfeiting all points?

This promotion reeks of desperation on QF's part. I admit that I benefit to keep Plat and I'm happy about that, though I do wonder if QF can survive in its current form and with its current board and management.

Are any P1s on track to get to 1800 flown SCs in the current membership year? With the hope that you'll only need to earn 1800 in the next year to retain, based on the rollover of 1800.
I wonder how many of the rolled over SCs contribute to the 2700 QF SC requirement?

I thought it was up to 24 hours prior, as per the Classic Reward fare rules for booking changes:

If your booking contains only Classic Flight Reward, then the following conditions apply:

Up to 24 hours before departure of the first flight:

The following changes are permitted up to 24 hours before departure of the first flight in your booking:
  • change to name (only for flights with a Qantas (QF) flight number on the ticket that are operated by Qantas)
  • change to class of travel
  • change to any segment routing (including departure, stopover or destination cities) or airline
Up to the commencement of travel for each flight:
The following changes are permitted up to the commencement of travel of each flight in your booking*:
  • change of flight number
  • change to date of travel
*Exception: If the change is requested for an airline that requires ticket reissue for changes to flight number or date of travel, changes are only permitted up to 24 hours before departure of the first flight in your booking.

But for cancellations it would appear you can cancel prior to the 'commencement' (departure?) of the first flight in the booking.

Requests to cancel a Classic Flight Reward ticket (where permitted) and re-credit points may be submitted prior to the commencement of the first flight in your booking and will incur a Cancellation Refund Fee in points. Only points that would not have expired will be re-credited

Combined with my 20% AMEX cashback offer this is indeed a very generous QF policy which I will be making use of. I am a P1 that has zero desire or need of flying in the near future but as my expiry is end September 2021 I will very happily book (and hopefully safely fly) something before then to take advantage of this. Nice one QF and thank you.

Excellent question and I was going to post something similar in the P1 thread. As background I had already re-qualified as a P1 sometime in late 19 so the Mar/Apr QF extension was of no value. If I understand the latest QF extension I only need to book and take one flight in 2021 and my status will be extended through to mid 22. Also interested to see what that rollover amount contributes towards 2023. @sudoer chime in as required as after reading your posts you seem to have worked through the options available for most "priority tier" travellers.

The situation around rollover SCs and the P1 QF requirement hasn't been clearly defined AFAIK. Common sense would suggest up to 1800 SC earned on QF can be rolled over and would count to the following year's QF tally, but I seriously doubt whether QF IT will calculate it accurately.

In all likelihood rollovers will post as a lump sum. If a P1 earns 700 QF SC + 300 partner SC and that posts to their activity statement in a single amount, I'd be willing to bet the QF SC tally registers the full 1000 SC.

QF could try implementing a system specifically for P1s which rolls over QF SC and partner SC in separate line items - but how would it prioritise rolling QF SC for members who've exceeded the 1800 SC cap? I'm sure it's possible, but it seems like an awful lot of once-off dev work and probably ends up in the too hard basket. QF still benefit significantly from a P1 earning the remaining 1800 SC to retain to 2023 so it's not like they would be shortchanging themselves in a major way.

As an aside, the 1800 SC StatusKeeper payment earlier this year did count to the QF tally, so there's some precedent for leniency on this..

Once I receive the Status Boost, how many Status Credits do I need to keep my status?

The number of Status Credits required varies based on status. The below table outlines the number of additional Status Credits and eligible Qantas Group flights required to keep status for the Membership Year that you receive the Status Credit Boost in.
SilverGoldPlatinumPlatinum One
Status Credits1253006001,800 (with at least 900 from Qantas marketed flights)
Qantas Group flights444

Something that I at first thought was pretty straight forward has seemingly become quite complicated. Fortunately for us Jan/Feb QFF, it is again really simple: we already have status to 2022 and will receive 50% status credits after our 2022 anniversaries. My head is spinning reading these posts!

I think QF has been generous, although the gesture actually costs nothing and they are also going to sell a lot of extra tickets.

That's correct.
The only issue might be getting through on the phone if you cut it too fine.

My year ends 30 November, I am sitting on 1883SC for this year. I have flights (domestic only) planned for next status year that will see me get 1920SC from flying through 30 November 2021.

Baby due in the middle of my status year, so this offer suits me perfectly! I'd imagine the following status year will also be about a 1920SC year.

I'm sure/hopeful that QF would count the full 1800SC as QF SC for the 2700 SC requirement, otherwise there is little point giving the full 1800. Room for enhancement though, that's for sure.

Hard to imagine how they wouldn’t. You didn’t get them from flying another airline!

I'll probably earn over 1800 flown SCs, assuming no major lockdowns.

There is JQ. Indeed if NZ doesn't open up trans-Tasman bubble before the end of my membership year I will end with 0 flown QF SCs.

So, just to confirm, if I fly in Dec 2020 on a flight that I booked before 23rd Nov, those status credits can be rolled over into the following year? (with the assumption that I also book another flight after the 23rd of Nov for travel before my membership year ends - which I've done).

If you have a Mar-Nov anniversary, that's correct.
