I just tried to book flights Sydney-Paris return, for two adults and one child, leaving late June returning August.

Qantas best price: $9,500.
Air France: $5,900.

go figure!

Pete

A sample of one comparison is not a valid comparison at all.

And I am no Qantas advocate either.

But then you have to fly on Air France.
And Air France do not fly from Australia. So will be on some other airline for part of the way
A lot of airlines fly to CDG Paris, so many options. For Paris other options are LHR & the channel train or other Eu cities & train

The "home" airline having a higher price than the others in not unusual, especially if the first leg is from home base. For example this has been noted for EK & QR many times.

Some time ago on FT there was a post about flights from UK/Germany to somewhere for guys working for the same company. The UK guys went via FRA, because it was cheaper. The German guys went via LHR, because it was cheaper.

If it was MrsH I'd have no problems with her flying Air France.....but then I do have a sizeable life insurance policy on her. :p

Check all your flight details, are you going thru China, if you are then you will almost certainly being flying. China Southern (CS). The quality comparison is substantial QF is a lot better than CS. Are you travelling J if so there are others to look at. Try using Booking Buddy and this will run a number of sites for you.
But as to QF prices versus other airlines they are dear. But you have to pay for quality.

Chalk and cheese? I would love to see who is flying the first leg to Asia or even Middle East.

yeah... I'm with the majority here re Air France.

not a carrier I would willingly fly... unless the alternative was an EU blacklisted airline. (and I happily fly garuda, so that's saying something!!)

They'll get you there and you'll be exhausted but $3,600 buys a lot of hot dinners in Paris. Plenty of bon vivant for you to get over the trauma. :)

Hmm many complain that qantas is too expensive and at the same time want qantas to employ australians to pay their employees top salaries and entitlements and demand that their airplanes are maintained by australian engineers using outdated practices.

Holden, and ford collapsed because no one wanted to buy their cars. Maybe one of QF's problems is that its too expensive and it does not or cannot fly to where people want to go and make a profit..
