Boeing May Axe 787-3 With ANA Cancellation

Boeing’s 787-3 mid-range variant is under a final threat of extinction following the decision by All Nippon Airways (ANA), the derivative’s sole customer, to change its order to other variants.

Commenting on his blog, Randy Tinseth, VP-marketing for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said, “Simply put, getting aircraft into their hands for earlier delivery was a better solution for them. As a result there are no longer any 787-3 orders in the backlog. Going forward, we’ll continue to assess the market viability of the -3.”

Tinseth added that the ANA order conversion does not affect the overall 787 order count, which as of Jan. 7 stood at 851 from 56 customers.

While the range is significantly less from what I’ve read, looks like a great domestic plane. It could service anywhere in Australia. Though I see the usefulness of the 787-9 in that it could do both long- and short-haul. Still, seating over 300 in a small aircraft just for domestic, doesn’t look too bad a deal.

I thought that the 787-3 was going to be a good plane for US domestic and short haul European but with the state of the US economy at the moment the chances of any US airline buying a new wide body aircraft isn't likely to happen for a few years.

The ways its going, i think its going to be a long time coming before anyone steps foot into one of these as a passenger. They say the end of this year for delivery, i think its a long shot and as they start testing it im sure things and snags will crop up delaying the plane once again.

Interesting that their marketing VP has a picture of two QF A380s in Syd in his blog of highlights for 2009 Randy's Journal

I dont see any issues with Boeing making their delivery target, they have a number of bodies on flight test now.

JetG550,

Welcome to AFF.

I think their is enough evidence around now for everyone to be optimistic that the deliveries will go ahead as planned. There are now several 787's flying the test schedule which has recently been accelerated.

Thanks mate, but i remember thats these B787 aircraft were suppose to fly for the Beijing Olympics on 08th Aug 2008.

Well thats long and gone, yes sure they have a small fleet flying 24/7 to get the program up and running fast but lets hope so by this Christmas you can book a seat on it. Its going to be touch and go.

Which probably makes it a little too specialised.

Hi there

The 747SR was also made for Japanese domestic operations, and if i recall there were quite a few of them.

The 787-300 was probably designed to the same thing as the 747SR, maybe ANA are scaling down shorthaul?

JAL are in no position to be buying aircraft at this time.

It's a wonder why Japanese airlines haven't codeshared with the trains for inter-city travel.

Cheers

Sydney was supposed to have a smartcard ticketing system in place for the 2000 Olympics. I am willing to bet that the 787 will be in service before the TCard :)

As Melbourne has partially rolled out their SA1billion fiasco that is still quite dodge :!:
