Boeing officially launched its long range 777 today:- http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4266695.stm

Does anyone think we'll see it on non-stop routes to London from Sydney or Melbourne? 777 is probably my favourite plane to fly in but I'm not sure I want to spend up to 20 hours non-stop in Economy class.

There must be some good savings for airlines to fly non-stop in terms of airport fees and taxes, turnaround times, fuel economy etc but will there be the passenger demand? I think I would choose it instead of the 1-3 hour layover in Spore or Bangkok

SYD-LHR non-stop is unlikely as SYD-LHR will be the premier route for A380 in QF colours (along with SYD-LAX). But 772LR (and 773ER to some extent) opens some new possibilities for Qantas, such as different Europe destinations non-stop from Australia (eg PER/MEL-FCO, MEL-ATH) that are not at the extremity of human endurance or aircraft range, and may benefit from the smaller aircraft compared with 744.

It also opens up USA destinations beyond LAD again with a smaller aircraft than the existing 744. So perhaps non-stop DFW comes back into play, or even ORD may be back on the card. Non-stop to YVR could also be viable with an aircraft of that size.

QF have been evaluating various 777 models (likely 777-200LR and 777-300ER) against the Airbus long haulers (A340-500/600). Both have different advantages to the type of operations that Qantas desires.

I've flown 777s with BA and SQ and found them to be much noisier planes that the A320 and A330s. However I did like BA's business class seating arrangement on their 777 - i.e. seats facing forward and backward and standard position was partly reclined. It made the cabin have a real lounge feel to it.

I understand QF will launch their A380 service from MEL-LAX and not Sydney. SQ will fly LHR-SYD but still probably thru SIn, unless they get the SYD-LAX rights they are looking for.
