Big development! Qantas seat selection!

We have both just been upgraded for LAX-MEL at about 4.5 days out which is great.

Seating is another issue. There are no two business seats together available and we have been allocated 13A & 13K. I rang QF and asked if they could put us down for two seats together and then asked if row 16 might be available and was told that I would need to pay $160 each for the privilege.

I explained that I believed that only applied for economy and was told 'we have been told that it applies to everyone.' I declined and will ring them back and ask politely again in the morning.

Am I missing something or does the following from the web site cover this?
Enjoy the extra legroom of an exit row seat, now available to book for an additional amount on most Qantas operated international flights in Economy, subject to availability.* Available to all customers who satisfy the exit row seat requirements and conditions of exit row seat bookings.

My limitted experience (and yes as WP) is to ask them to mark the request for the two seats together. They will not promise a result and often play down the chances but I have nearly always ended up sitting with partner. Even at check in it is worth a go - I have found the BP beeps at the gate and moved to an adjacent seat. I don't know if this is an unofficial WP benefit or not.

Hi there - I am eagerly awaiting a phone call to ask me if I want to upgrade on SYD-LAX next week so have a couple of questions :-
- did you have to use points to upgrade?
- what fare class were you in?
- what status are you - gold or platinum?

I just want to see if its worth holding hope for an upgrade or not. Thanks!

Mrs Roo and I often end up in different seats, but have always ended up together. Even the odd occasion when the staff haven't come through before boarding, the kindness of strangers has come to the fore agreeing to swap.

poppet,

I rang and asked for an upgrade some weeks ago using points. Looking at seat counter we may have received an Op Up but it was worth the points to me. So to answer your questions:

  1. We did use points though I'm not sure if I needed to us points.
  2. We went from T to U class. (PE to Business)
  3. Currently Gold but will be Platinum again shortly.
I hope this helps. :D

Out of interest, do you have the loads from EF for your flight? I'm on the LAX-MEL flight in a few weeks, and it's over-sold by the looks of it. Just curious to see how full your flight is compared to mine.

For a trip MEL/FRA and back last month, I rang to request row 16, but was told that exit rows now had to be paid extra for. I explained that was only for economy and they went away and confirmed I was correct. I finished up with row 16 for 3 out of the 4 legs, at no additional cost.

I rang them back this morning and was told the same story. I quoted (politely) the QF web site and she said she would make some inquiries and then confirmed my request for row 16 had been entered in the system.
ps Remember this is the US site I am ringing.

From expert flyer:

Seat Counter also says all zeros.

Yesterday there were a few seats available but not many.

Thanks! We got the magic unprompted phone call today so have upgraded from discount economy to business using points on SYD-LAX next Tuesday. I am so pleased!
