Hi all,

just trying to figure out the best way to use my FF points for a trip to the US in November.

Its its for my wife and myself, I currently have around 88,000.

I can get plus pay and get economy flights for $2600

any other ways to use these more effectively? Eg upgrades to premium or business?

thanks!

Upgrades from Y-J (economy to business) will cost you 72,000 each way. Y+ to J (premium econ. to bus. will be 45,000 each way I think. Your best best is probably points plus pay.

Depends on where in the US. Im flying Y+ SYD to JFK. if I want J upgrade its 60k points. SYD to LAX is 45K.
if you won't get the extra 2k points to make 90k by November you could make an upgrade request for both of you on the way back. You should have your outward flight points by then (assumes flying on a paid eligible ticket)
J might be a nice way to end the trip and treat the misses. ( again assumes you are flying on upgradable ticket and on a 45k points to upgrade route)

Make the most of the current airfare wars between players on the US route, paying $2600 is not good use of points. If you have plans for travel intra US you could use points for that, but always look at the opportunity cost.

Points Plus Pay redemptions are generally poor value.

You can purchase regular economy transpacific returns fares for two for that $2600 or a little more and still have the 88000 points left.

Not good use of points as serfty says, getting upgrade would depend on your QFF status and availability and usually not good on that route anyway. I'd be thinking more of deals on VA, AirNZ and use points internally in USA on AA.

How long has it taken to save those points? Upgrade requests are a lottery and you need to spend more on an upgradeable ticket.

You could save your points for use in the future.
