Hi,

Absolute newbie here so if my questions are unbelievably simple or have been answered before please just direct me towards an existing thread.

I'm a QFF member and want to earn points on economy flights Perth to Vancouver (via HK) with Cathay Pacific. I know they are a oneworld partner so I should be able to earn points but I'm not sure of the method. Is it as simple as booking flights on the CX website and they will ask for a frequent flyer number for a partner (Qantas) airline? I have a Woolworths/Qantas credit card that earns extra points if I pay for Qantas flights using it, does this also apply if I book CX flights through Qantas?
The Qantas website should be able to book oneworld airlines (correct?) although I've heard CX flights often don't appear and I may have to call up. Does this incur a fee/is there any way around it?

Any help/direction will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to AFF.

The qantas website is not ideal for booking wholly paid (with $$) fares. You should book those direct via the Cathay site or a travel agent (either in person or on line).

You need to carefully compare the qantas points earning table for the fare you are looking at on Cathay. Not all fares will allow you to earn full points, and in some cases, you won't get any points (depending how cheap the fare is). The Cathay site will often have the cheapest fares.

the qantas site can be used for Cathay pacific awards, but you are correct here in that not all cathay flights show on the qantas site. you may have to call to either find or book awards.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

As MEL_Traveller said, best to book direct with CX or through a TA. Just quote your QFF number in making the booking and the CX flights will earn the QFF points and status credits (subject to being in an earning fare class).

Here is Qantas' points and SC calculator; I think its accurate (its new): https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/do/dyns/initialPointsEarned. You can vary your QFF status, the class of fare taken and the airline travelled on each leg (if there is a choice).

QF have recently devalued the points and SCs earned in 1) below-business-class types of fares and 2) airlines other than Qantas.
