Hi folks. First post.

Since starting in a new job this year, I fly a fair bit for work. In the last two months, with a bit of personal travel and some work travel, I've easily acquired PS earlier this week. With planned travel (both business and pleasure) coming up, making SG is my goal, and I have until 30 Sep '12 to do it. Eaasy - we already have a SYD-AKL trip in May coming up, and a few domestic personal trips too.

However, I'm looking at a couple of Status Run options to keep up my sleeve just in case time runs short.. and I've been doing some calculations on what the best value SC's are. See, I don't have a huge number of points saved up, though I do earn around 15,000 of them a month from credit card and partner spending.

From Sydney, these are the two best value routes I've found for earning SC's. Note, as I'll be paying cash (or mostly cash) for these, they aren't JASA seats, because I don't have the points to make much of a difference to the cash price.

SYD - BRI - TSV (and return) in standard economy class (Y) costs around $670 and earns 100 SC. This works out to be $6.70 per SC. Reasonable value.
SYD - MEL - HBA (and return), also in Y, costs $539 and earns 80 SC. This also works out at around $6.70 per SC.

Best value, albeit an international hop, is SYD - AKL on Lan J class. Cost is $750 return, and earns 160 SC. Cost works out to be $4.70 per SC.

Does anyone know of any routes that offer better value ex Syd, or where positioning flights are relatively cheap?

Welcome to AFF. :D

CBR-xSYD-HBA r/t in Business class JASA for 200 SC's. Costs 32000 QFF and $200. ...

sorry for my newbie question
is that one way?

ps, loving the site

forgot to ask

ozcjr what did you end up doing?

It's CBR-SYD-HBA and return (costs 16,000 points + $$$ each way).

thank you, really considering this

has anyone landed at 1000 and taken the 1040 back?
guessing it's on the same aircraft?

cheers

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I dd a JASA some months back, TSV/BNE/DRW return in J 48K points and $230 taxes I think (was offered double Q status points at time), went into QF lounge in Darwin hopped back on board same plane an hour later, had half same crew, asked by FA "what happened" said "I didn't like Darwin", he replied "you didn't have time to see it!" the FA's thought it was hilarious.

What flies into HBA usually flies straight back out.
So your 10:00 arrival will fly back as your 10:40 departure.

That is by far the best value dollar/SC JASA I have ever seen!

TSV-BNE-DRW for 24000 points + $100 or so on a JASA is the best SC earner, you can only do it once a day and not all days and you need to overnight in TSV:

Factor in the double points and its great value given the points hall on the route, a WP could effectively get 280 SCs for 24000 points + $200 net gain!
