Best value for AMEX points

What sort of AMEX have the points been earned with? You could transfer to Asia Miles as they have some 'cheap' J redemption fares - up to 25,000 miles for 160,000 asia miles.

Platinum charge card will get you Marco Polo Gold, and 1:1 transfers to Asia Miles.

Just checked and can be done online :)
170000 miles return after 15% online discount...
I guess if you have points to burn then that is OK.

Personally if I wanted to go to the USA in business class then I would buy US Airways miles for an award at ~AUD2,500.

How do you do this? ie "buy US Airways miles for an award at ~AUD2,500"

As explained in the thread posted by serfty.

Buy 110,000 US Airways miles and with taxes and surcharges the cost should come to ~AUD2,500.

No-one has mentioned SPG-AA... likely to get far lower fuel fines.

With Qantas? Any Seat awards earn SCs.

Based on content of my post that Pumbaa was replying to, I'm pretty sure he/she means:

But [if you transfer to CX or SQ instead of QF] then you can't earn status with JASAs!

Rather than:

But then you can't earn status [on QF] with JASAs!

All great advice - thanks.

Just found the '15% bonus Velocity Points' promotion on this forum.

Is this a good deal? In my case I just joined Velocity and therefore currently have zero points.

It's not the best deal but it's ok. Last year they had 20/25% bonus but better than nothing. However if you're looking to redeem just yet I'd be just parking them in Amex.

If you look at the T&Cs for the Velocity promotion, you'll see that the OP can get 20% bonus as they have a Platinum Charge... All other cards are a 15% bonus

Combined with some of the discount Velocity awards its probably decent though I suspect.

Yup, they have a half-points flexi->business upgrade offer on domestic flights until end of Dec.
So for example you can transfer just over 4300 Amex Rewards to velocity and get a Mel-> Perth flexi for $305 then use 4950 points to upgrade to J class (which is priced at $999-1355) giving you somewhere from $694-$1050 for your 4300 points.

Yes that was what I was thinking of, 30% off redemption rate (or half priced upgrades) along with 15% extra transfers all adds up.

I spoke to an Amex agent and they suggested transfer to Asia Miles because their burn rates are better than QF's rates. However, my questions are -

1. Can anyone confirm that ASA seats are NOT available via Asia Miles travelling on QF?

2. As QF gold, would I have better access to Classic Award seats via QF than via Asia Miles as a zero?

Thanks

1. I would say this would probably be the case (ASA's at classic level earning points/SC's seem unique to Qantas in relation to Frequent Flyer Programs).

2. Somewhat better I'm sure. Note that xASA's don't appear to use elite additional award inventory.
