Hi I am trying to figure out the best utilisation of my points and free upgrades. My wife and I are looking to go to the states mid next year and I currently have 290k in points and 5 free business class upgrades (I am platinum).

I was thinking of flying premimum econonmy from SYD to LAX which would use all my points and then book the PER to SYD leg separately and try to utilise the free upgrades. The costs are still quite high even using the points ($800 each) so not sure if this is the best use of points and I would still have to pay for the domestic legs.

Does anyone have any suggestions on better options.

Thanks.

Redeeming on EY is often much better value as the fees are a lot lower. So a trip to Europe might be the best value for your points, in terms of keeping the cash value down.

Thanks for that, I have been looking at that option even flying to JFK on EY but there are no direct flights from Perth to Abu Dhabi and I would have to fly east cost first.

A paid flight to Sydney or Singapore may possibly still prove cheaper than the fees on the US direct routes.
