Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

With QF points there is no "OW partners will charge" or "they may also charge you lower fuel surcharges.". It is only QF and what it is in QF awards tables.

For example a AA freq flyer award on a QF aircraft generally needs less AA miles and no cash surcharges as the AA award chart: nothing to with QF freq flyer program. This works both ways

Many consider this the most value from QF points: http://www.australianfrequentflyer....ogram/oneworld-award-140k-280k-420k-8228.html

I have been crediting QF flights to AAvantage for ~5 years

I was trying to keep it simple for him/her and not sure that answer did much to keep it clear...

Anyway yes I guess you are are right they either come out at the QF award table rate or the One World award table rate and then some distances flown between two cities can be shorter and fall in different zone rates... Don't really know which zones/tables the QF and the BA/EK awards fall into to get those point figures??? As an example just check a few different options from New York to Perth for classic awards...

Roomer, I assume if you have collected 150k QF points you know how to find these options on the QF site (even if your struggling a bit with quotes on this site :) ) and just click through and book them... You can only book Qantas or other airlines in the OW alliance or their partners using Qantas points through the Qantas site and no other..... The One World 140k award could also be useful for you so do go check that thread...

Thanks casanovawa for that.

You are half right, because I am struggling on all accounts:)

i have a just been blindly collecting points thinking that it would be a simple case of redeeming them.

i think however now is the time for me to investigate the suggestions people have offered and not stretch the friendship. Thank you all for your comments, it's been very very enlightening!

Wow, reading this thread has made me very tired.....confused too...

The main thing to remember is you only ever contact the airline whose frequent flyer scheme holds the points you want to use for the award ticket irrespective of the airline you intend to travel on (as long as they are an eligible partner airline in the applicable frequent flyer program). For example:

Wanting to redeem QF frequent flyer points for travel on CX SYD/HKG (call QF not CX)

Wanting to redeem QF frequent flyer points for travel on JL NRT/LHR (call QF not JL)

Wanting to redeem QF frequent flyer points for travel on FJ LAX/NAN (call QF not FJ)

Wanting to redeem VA frequent flyer points for travel on HA HNL/BNE (call VA not HA)

Wanting to redeem AA frequent flyer points for travel on QF SYD/NRT (call AA not QF)

Wanting to redeem AV frequent flyer points for travel on SQ SIN/LHR (call AV not SQ)

....and there is provision to recognise your QFF points?
As all the others have stated above many times, with QF points you only deal with QF. Your currency is QF points:- you can only spend that currency (QF points) with QF. No such thing as "recognise your QFF points" with any other airline.

QF points are like Zim dollars (hyperinflation and unable to be spent elsewhere else)

Thanks for that Mwenenzi, so I assume you do this on the AA site ( I actually joined AA FF when I took out 3 weeks Admiral lounge membership) and there is provision to recognise your QFF points ?

Other airlines do not have access to your QF points balance so don't expect an onboard greeting any time soon from an AA F/A along the lines of "OMG Mr Roomer I see you have 150,000 points in the QF freq flyer program."

Airlines within the same access may recognise your frequent flyer tier status eg QF WP is One World Emerald so it is useful for things like priority boarding when travelling on AA or getting free food when travelling in whY on AA whereas everyone else has to pay.

In that case if making a booking for a paid fare on the AA site you can enter your QF freq flyer number or QF ffn depending on whose program you wish to credit the flights to.

If you're travelling AA on an award ticket & therefore won't earn any frequent flyer points or status credits I would add the ffn of the airline you have the highest status with eg if QF WP but AA nothing, enter your QF ffn because you will get access to better seating, free food in whY & priority boarding, free checked baggage & there's always a remote chance of an upgrade if they're oversold but you'd be behind AA Elites for that.

Thanks for that Oz and Mwenezi

i think my confusion stemmed from my misreading Mwenezi"s earlier comment

"I have been crediting QF flights to AAvantage for ~5 years"

i mistakenly read that as QFF points to AAvantage, thinking therefore you could just the points on the AA site.

I see now, he is saying if you fly with Qantas you tell them to credit any points earnt on that flight to AA but that any QFF points earned via credit cards etc can only be redeemed via the Qantas site.

Correct ?

Yes:
I earn AA miles in the AA freq flyer program for QF flights (or BA, CX, MH flights if I flew with those airlines)
I earn QF points in the QF freq flyer program for Jetstar flights and some credit card spend.
I earn VA points in the VA freq flyer program for Virgin flights and some Air NZ flights
Other Amex cc spend goes to SPG and then to AA

For a few months I was earning US Airways miles in the US freq flyer program for Air NZ flights. These will in time become AA miles.:)

Freq flyer programs are not fairer & simplier :p

You will get no argument from me on that score :)

thanks Mwenenzi

Help! Am QFFF Platinum with 260,000 points. Considering a SYD/LON/NYC/SYD for myself in October. My dilemas are... A) Redeem 280,000 points for RTW J class. Easy....no points earnt, nil balance afterwards! B) Pay for some type of combination of fares, IE, pay a PE SYD/LON on any one world carrier, awards NYC/HNL on AA, JQ HNL/SYD paid star class? Then the dilemma to get from LON to NYC....high taxes? Any suggestions? A stopover in SIN/HKG might be nice to break the flight, and some stopover between NYC and SYD too. Ideas? Many thanks in advance!

I bought AA miles on promo to go between LAX and London so we each spent 62,500 miles to go BA in First and that was lovely. I think NYC to London or vice versa should be easier.
If you are doing a round the world then don't mess up the 280,000 opportunity in J.

OBB, Your patience is commendable !

OP

1) QFF points could only be used from QF site (on QF / EK or OW partners as shown / available on QF site only)

What is available on the partners' site is not necessarily available to QFF members.

2) Most would prefer to use their QFF points in the following descending order:

a) RTW

b) Upgrade (J to F)

c) Long haul Classic (MASA is now dead & gone)

Everything else is not worth it IMO.

There used to be a simple answer to using QFF points and I was looking forward to all the travel.

The answer is not so simple anymore....
