I'm a Gold Qantas FF sitting on over 1 million points. I've tried to buy 4 J seats to the US for January 09 using points but with no luck (as usual).

Would I do better phoning than trying on-line? Is the Pacific route an impossible one for redeeming points? Are there secrets to finding seats for international travel generally?

Try on cathay or japan airlines or someone else in oneworld. Phone QF though to access partner/oneworld seats.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Book 353 days in advance. Doubt you will be able to get 4 J seats on the same flights though... Alternatively, use your points on a OneWorld award and route through Japan... Much easier to book those awards on the phone though, especially since the online system has now changed.

Only way you can get improved availability, is by having some QFF status, eg Platinum.

The number of points in your balance is not going to help. Your FF status may help. If you hold Platinum status, then its worth calling to see if they can find the seats. If less than Platinum status, then the likelihood of them releasing award seats for you is very low.

Four business class seats is a huge ask for trans-Pacific services. And especially when looking at the peak time for FF awards (Christmas school holidays). You may be able to find something if you are willing to split it over different flights and not necessarily all travel on the same day.

From my experience, phoning QF and getting a helpful telephone agent is the best start. It's a million times easier for them to check availability and suggest different routes than it is for you to try each and every option using the QF website.

The few times I've redeemed by FF points for First / Business international flights over those peak periods I've had to book as far in advance as possible but if you're looking for this December that's probably not very helpful.

As others have suggested, be as flexible as possible with your routing to maximise your chances of getting to your preferred destination - remember that QF flies to the US from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane (and possibly others also that I don't know about) so don't limit yourself to one particular departure city. Also be willing to split up into groups of 2 and to fly on different carriers / routes to get where you are going, as it is obviously much harder to book larger groups using points.

Depending on how much time you have you might also consider doing an around-the-world redemption and starting your trip by flying to the UK / Europe. FF flights to the UK seem to be a bit easier to obtain, and you have more choice with the airline which again helps with availibility.

Once in the UK it should be relatively easy to get a LHR-JFK or similar flight for your whole party - I've got a BA flight booked on Boxing Day this year in which we have 6 F award seats and 2 F upgrades from DONE4 fares. By the time you are ready to return from the US (assuming that's going to be Feb 09) you should have slightly improved availability on the pacific flights home.

Don't forget either that in a month or so you should have the ability to redeem your FF points on any seat rather than just the FF award category seats, so your large points balance will come in handy there.

How does this work?

Thanks everyone for suggestions and comments. :)

On Qantas we're not sure yet, as the program details haven't yet been officially announced (other than the general announcements that this new program is likely to commence around July this year).

If it's anything like other carriers it basically means Qantas will assign some dollar value to your FF points, and you can then use those points to purchase any flight rather than paying with 'real' money. Rather than being only able to access a small bucket of FF availability on each flight, you should be able to use your points to purchase a seat on any flight that still has paid availability.

The exact details of how this will work, including the all-important $/FF ratio, are yet to be revealed.
