I have just booked one of my regular PER-ADL return trips in Y but the return leg is a B717. Any advice on which are the best seats to grab? This is my first time on a 717.

Thanks,

Mick

I have travelled on a many of these lovely bird's (145 actually) & I can say the best seat to me is 1A or 1C (has more legroom than 1 d,e or f), thats of course in the whY cabin configured planes. Have never had the pleasure to travel in J on the B717 as I have never seen 1 in WA!

As Danny said row 1 if all Y and you have enough status to select it of course. Other than that the only bad seats are the middle seats on the RHS and the last few rows. In particular row 23 on the 2 class and row 25 and possibly 24 on single class. Problem with last few rows is engine noise and lack of windows.

Another vote for row 1, but the lack of overhead storage at the front can be a PITA unless you board early.

100% left side, and as far forward as you can get..

Haha.. flew out of PBO last week and to avoid a storm flight crew realty pushed the rate of climb... (which they did warn about) factor in the noise you get from the last few rows + no windows and it would have been pretty close to it I guess.

I don't know.... if you are in the last row you can pretend you are in a space shuttle taking off with the angle they get!
Not to mention the noise, vibrations and darkness.

I remember being in the last row of a 717 and having two go-arounds at night in a cyclone at MKY. Not being able to get a visual reference of any sort was most unpleasant.

Are the exit rows on the 717 worth it? Was looking at snagging the left window exit for a trip to Uluru. Or are there better views more forward?

First of all - assuming its a two class B717 (are there still any Y only B717s in Qantaslink service still? or have they all been converted to two-class birds now? ) In answer to your question - yes they are definately worth it if you have long legs and prefer leg room, you may have more chance of a seat mate next to you though. Exit rows 14 are better than Row 13 but both have heaps of legroom, right hand side exit rows are the "three seat" side e.g. 13DEF and 14DEF may have a slightly better chance of an empty seat next to you, possibly? But with exit rows you are looking at a wing. Best views would be anywhere forward of about Row 11.

Its a 1 class bird Im on. Ive got 16A at the moment. Rows 3&4 are empty at the moment. For a 50 min flight i guess leg room isnt an issue. Im more interested in the view out the window of the rock.

Ah OK - didn't realise it was a short ASP-AYQ leg, and interesting to hear that there are still single class B717s knocking around the fleet. If its views out of the window then yes anything forward or backwards clear of the wing should be the go. Forward of the wing is better in my opinion if you can as I find that the wings on the B717 do impede views forward if you are seated anywhere behind row 14. If views are the priority then any window seat forward of Row 13 would be the best in my opinion.

Bit of a guessing game but depending on winds coming into land it will be a bit of a lottery as to which side of the aircraft you will want to be on (depending on circuit direction and approach). Seatguru has both variants of the Qantas B717 on their site, and the position of the wings in the B717 seatmaps often surprises people, but the seatmap may assist you.

Just over half of the 717's are single class only and would operate the more regional routes.

Looks like the one I'm on ADL-PER is a single class.

Does row 1 open up at T-minus 80 for SG?

And thanks for all the feedback, much appreciated!

I flew the 717 last week, sitting in 3F. Legroom seemed on par with the 738's in the fleet and with 3D/E empty it obviously made the trip more comfortable.

That's the understatement of the year! It's damn awful!!!

If you fly Y on a 717, for my money it is an aisle seat on the side with three seats. No one in the middle. Row 5's quite nice.

The 717 is pure luxury on the SYD-CBR route I fly a lot, compared to the wretched Dash 8. I curse the Dash.

I don't mind the Dash-8 if its only 50% full...... They used to have light loads, but there seems to be less flights now per day and the loads on the Dash-8s are higher.
