Hi Folks,

Along with Mrs huwcar, I'm travelling in whY on the following flights:

QF029, MEL-xHKG-LHR, 23/7

QF032, LHR-SIN, 22/8

QF010, SIN-MEL, 23/8

Although we're both NB I'm still going to try my luck at calling to pre allocate seats. I'm quite tall and usually find most whY seats on most airlines rather uncomfortable.

What are the best seats to request for these flights, on the off chance I am able to do it?

Thanks for your opinions.

As an NB you will be able to successfully request pre-allocation until a predefined limit of the number of preallocated cabin has been reached, this is between 25% and 75%.

Given you flights are three months away your chances are reasonable.

Note you will not be able to select from 'premium' seating in the first several rows at the front of the cabin.

Thanks for the info and the links.

Would I be correct in thinking that the QF029 and QF010 747 flights would be a 4 Class configuration? I'm not sure where this info might be listed...

I believe all Kangaroo configured Qantas 744's are now in 4 class configuration.

One way to find out is to use SeatCounter - The Booking Class Availability Machine to do an availability search for your flights. If you see entries for T and/or W class then it's certainly 4 class.

Yep - T and W both appear for QF029 and QF010. Every booking class looks to be "green" at this stage too. Given the ~$1000 difference in price from last week to this week it may not stay that way for long...

Thanks again!

Edit: Actually, they're not all green... I had my dates back to front - dd/mm instead of mm/dd.
Edit2: Interesting that SeatCounter says QF032 is a 747, but Qantas says it's an A380.

Your first and last flights are on a 4 class 744, your LHR-SIN sector is on the A380

The last 4 rows have 2 seats per row on the sides instead of the 3 further forward. Both B & J have IFE boxes under the seat in front, but they are centred & there is room for your feet either side. The widow seats have quite a bit of space between the seat & the side of the plane which is handy for storing blankets, pillows etc when you aren't using them. +1 & I recently had 72 J & K both ways between MEL & LAX, & were fairly happy with them.

Does anyone know if the back row seats (in each section) in Y on the A380 fully recline? I can recall being on aircraft where the seat stopped reclining when it hit the back wall. Shame because it's the only row where you could recline free of guilt and also avoid the kid kicking the seat behind and the person who grabs the headrest and pulls on it hard every time they get up!

I'd assume these seats would go quickly if they do fully recline.

EDIT (of course proximity to the bogs is a turn-off!)

I am not aware of any current Qantas aircraft configuration where any seats have restricted recline when compared with other seats in the same cabin. although I have no personal experience in the specific seats you mention, I certainly would have no expectation that they would have restricted recline function.

If there was any restriction, I would expect it to be noted on sites like SeatGuru.

From memory the rear seats in the mini cabin in QF WHY on some 747s have limited recline. Not sure if these seats are noted on Seatguru though.

Seatguru does make some comments about some rear rows on the 747s. I would like to see actual measurements relating to the claim (i.e. normal recline is x inches and those seats are y inches, where y = x - z). Just because the seat reclines until it touches the wall does not mean its restricted compared with other seats unless Y < X. I have seen no reports or information indicating Y < X on QF A380 and have not experienced this on other QF aircraft. However, I have not sat in all rear cabin rows on all QF aircraft configs.

Thanks, guys. I can't recall the aircraft but I've travelled a lot of airlines back in the good old days and it happened a couple of times.
