I got an email from KLM yesterday that offers excellent prices. Maybe they will be an option by the time tickets open up to book for your date. The offer prices were ex Sydney though.

It will offer you optimum comfort and aims to accentuate the at-home feeling. July 2013 will see the inaugural flight of the first KLM aircraft with the new interior including the new seat.

Have you considered Finnair? Their J class fares look very reasonable, well ex Singapore anyway.

Thanks so much everyone for these great tips. I have Skyscanner and Best Flights in my favourites - I like the updates on Europe prices too!
Appreciate the recommendation re Singapore, Qantas and Cathay Pacific as the "top shelf" for business class. My husband is very keen on choosing Qantas.

Also, Garuda have just announced their own version of the Kangaroo route, with a First Class suite on the Jakarta segment and on board chef. Pricing will be interesting. Article from AUSBT.

If you can fit in an extra sector, I've found AKL to Europe fares consistently cheaper than Aust to Europe. Over the years, I've been on Cathay, Thai, Air NZ/Alitalia, SIA/Lufthansa, MH/KLM; most I've ever paid for AKL to FCO or MXP is A$6000, least A$4000 (at fx rate NZ$1 = 80c) & I've done all my travel in peak season, not low or shoulder.

In terms of who is the best - if you want to stick with OneWorld (I assume that is why your husband wants Qantas?) then look at Cathay. Their Biz produce is FAR superior to the Qantas product, the staff are friendlier and as noted by others above, it's also often cheaper. Yet all your (I assume) husband's benefits of points, lounges etc are maintained because they are also OneWorld.

Hi, I got a good airfare with British Airways in October last year - and flying June this year (from and to Brisbane) for just under $6,000 business class. I subscribed to BA's offers. This was before the Qantas/Emirates partnership, but still flying BA/Qantas - saying that, BA now have a partnership with Cathay, so flying out of Brisbane is still very much a possibility (and you may even be lucky enough to transfer to the new BA A380 out of Hong Kong which starts late this year.

Cathay and Finnair are pretty good; my July booking with them is about $7500.

There are a few companies offering up to 70% on business class flights. I had a friend recently get a deal on business SYD LAX return for about $4000.00 which is about premium economy rates. Try looking up L4L and Alpha Flight Guru for starters. I have not used them but know people who have and have had great success.

A little research might be appropriate Air Travel Forum: Alpha Flight Guru - TripAdvisor

I'd be too cautious to use them

I am going in June with stop over in Dubai return Sydney/ Heathrow Qantas business class for $6700, and have got confirmed seats in the little cabin at the front of the A380 , mixture 12a and 13a. Booked last year when first came out. Agree the lowest fares ever had was during GFC, bought Economy plus upgraded to business

i piad USD $6.5K for jfk-singapore return on singapore airlines...
and also USD $6.5K jfk-syd return
and $USD 7.5K jfk-syd-sf0-jfk on QF /AA codeshare
is that good? all thruogh a travel agent...

Best price (and my only paid J ticket) that we found was bought around March last year that was €2,500 plus taxes on QF from FRA-BNE return for a companion fare. This even allowed for a stopover providing we used a TA, of which Travel Guru was of great assistance. It worked out to be around $A4,200-4,300 from memory.

Best bit was we *had* to go back to Europe this year for the return leg. :p Not sure if I will get this deal again since the demise of QF5/6 :(

Fares are often cheaper for Europe to Australasia return than for Australasia to Europe return. I have flown J on Finn Air, CX, MH, Qatar, BA, TK etc to Europe and all are better value for money than QF. KLM business class is not great (very crowded and limited privacy) but see if you can choose a codeshare MH flight.

You could try Finnair via Helsinki. I am using them to go to Geneva in June for $5700 return. Try to get on flight with new flat-bed business class seats, most likely on A330 via Bangkok or Hong Kong, (call them and check if it is scheduled for your proposed flight). Other planes have very angled seats. My husband also recently booked BA business to London for $7130 but I think they may have gone up a bit in the last week.

I was surprised to get no feedback on this so I'll rephrase my question.
What is the best price you received for business class return Aus-London in the last 12 months?
Which airlines should I subscrbe to for specials? Ideally we would like to fly out of Brisbane.

We got to Faro for $4450 AUD inclusive of taxes with Thai on this routing at Easter. And it was last minute due to a family death.

Sounds good to me, especially as SQ's a fine airline :)

Another method, check out the round the world offers. I have used the Lufthansa offer the past few years. Auckland - Vancouver - Frankfurt - Casablanca - Madrid - Bangkok - Auckland under $8,000. This is a combo of Star alliance carriers, Air New Zealand, Air Canada, Lufthansa, and Thai. All good Bus class aircraft, and good lounges for any waits.
This Year I am booked Auckland, - Vancouver - Toronto - Dusseldorf - Milan - ( Some internal flights in europe paid by myself ) - Moscow - Zurich - Los Angeles - Auckland...still under $8000

Some get cheap Y flight to ASIA like SIN or HKG or even better out of TPE then onwards in J.

Another place as a general fare guide is HERE.

If you don't mind a little detour the cheapest business return is buy a cheap $399 economy flight to Bali and an Etihad business flight to Paris or London. Etihad from Denpasar is less than $4000 return business class - sometimes I have seen it around $3300
