hi there, do you remember the name of the place/places in china town that offer good rates for US$ from AUD$? i need to convert some aus to us$ this week. or do you remember whereabouts in china town? thanks

Was told of a good fx currency exchange place in Melbourne today. Unfortunately, it was after Jnr#1 had just exchanged at KVB Kunlun and was on the way back to the office. A workmate suggested United Currency Exchange in Swanston Street.

United Currency Exchange Pty Ltd (Melbourne) - Place Where Changing is Free! No Fees! No Commission! No Charges! - Foreign Currency Exchange | Cash Passport | Money Gram

XE.com 0.895

Exchange rate at KVB Kunlun 0.879

Travelex 0.865

Commonwealth Bank 0.8552

United Currency Exchange 0.884

Sounds like it's worth a look.

This is my first post here so be gentle with me. I'm in Melb CBD and here's the places where I usually check before buying any forex:

1) Hui Lian: Tel 98988888 , Level 10, 230 Collins Street Melbourne. Website. 汇è”æœåŠ¡ - Online Foerign Exchange Networks

2) An Ying: Tel 96634567, Level M, 183 Exhibition Street. webste: http://www.anying.com/Location.aspx

3) Kun Lun .

I find that the first two companies mostly only stock USD so their rates are usually better than the third one but Kun lun has quite a few number of different currencies in stock everyday i.e: GBP, EUR, CAD.

Good luck!

With some of these places its worth calling. For example I went to everforex on Collins St in May for GBP and EUR and they had run out of both.

Gday

In Melbourne 2 weekends ago. Had time to kill so did the walk around of about 12 places. Winner for Yen and USD was United Currency at 261 Swanson street. It is only a large hole in the wall so there were people lined up on the footpath. Got some Yen there then at 95.38(mid market at that time was 97.11ish) walked back to Travel Money Oz(forgot address, look it up online) and tested their 'Best rate guarantee'. Had to produce a photo of the rate board from United with date, time and rate clearly visible. They honored their word and gave me 95.40.

In Sydney on Wednesday, again time to kill so did the walkaround to about 10 places from Wynyard to Haymarket. Needed more Yen. Winner was a small independent forex counter(couldnt see any name) at the back of the newsagent at 735 George street in Haymarket. Got 95.50(mid market at the time was 96.85)I also got a printed receipt with transaction details. Again walked back up to Travel Money Oz across from Wynyard station to test their guarantee. Sure enough he matched the 95.50. Pretty bloody happy.

At that point in time all the banks and travelex, amex etc were offering 90-93 Yen with the average being 91.8ish. If your gunna change $250 it probably isnt worth your bother but if your changing 4 and 5 digit AUD amounts it makes a huge difference.

Note i have no interest or affiliation with any of the shops I have spoken about. I am just a keen holidaymaker who hates being bent over by a middleman.

For using a credit card overseas 28 degrees mastercard is the king.

And finally if changing AUD to MYR in Malaysia great rates are available in Kuala Lumpur at Mid Valley shopping centre on the bottom floor where the escalators go down there are two money changers in a row of three shops(i think there is a donut shop between them). I change money here all the time and occasionally get better than mid market rates. As other posters have mentioned in Malaysia, just like Singapore, the spreads are super tight. For AUD to MYR it is around 2 pips.

Thanks for the work and posting Pele. I won't change money in AU myself, but it's unavoidable sometimes, even just for peace of mind for some people.

As a data point, Jnr#1 got good USD FX rate at United Currency Exchange (Melb.) this morning. XE.com was 0.77474 and United paid 0.7719.

Having a difficult time purchasing Croatian Kunar in Perth, I am considering purchasing some in London which will be my first stop over. I would wait and draw some out at the ATM when I arrive but need to catch a taxi and they may not take credit cards.

Where are you arriving, they normally have ATMs at the airport.

For the first time ever I price matched Australia Post forex rate at Travel Money Oz and they even rounded it up a few cents more which was great!
Just took in a print out from the Aust Post site.

Looking to exchange USD for AUD in Sydney around the rocks area, any recommended places?

I always use KVB Sydney in the CitiBank building. They're usually very busy and you can order by phone. No commission on over $2,000 and they're usually 1-1.5% off the spot rate.

Can't say, it depends on what they get delivered on the day. You might get some new ones and you might get some old ones.

Do you know of any other places to go that have low fees for under 2000 when getting AUD?
