Now that UA has ceased operation to Cairns from Guam what are options in both Y and J using $ rather than points/miles?

I positioned to GUM flying JQ OOL/NRT then DL NRT/GUM to commence a (now defunct) USDM GUM/Aust/GUM 30K points special so used the GUM/BNE legs to get home to BNE then a month later did the BNE/GUM legs to position again for an AV LM one way award ticket GUM/BOS.

JQ usually have reasonable one way fares OOL/NRT ie you're not penalised like on legacy carriers if you happen to only want to fly one way with them. If you have Velocity ff points IIRC it's around 16,900 ish for NRT/GUM on DL.

I miss the glory days of GUM trips via USDM! I did 3 trips in less than 2 years.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Realise you're in SYD but BR fly ex BNE to TPE then to GUM on one their 8 'Hello Kitty' themed A330's although from memory I don't think there was an immediate connection.

I can't stop myself asking..... why did you do the above??

If you need to ask then you don't really need to know the answer. :)

I read that and thought, has Mr_Orange temporarily forgot which forum this is?

I haven't, but much of what I see referenced is "before my time". I'm only a relatively recent frequent (not so at the moment) flyer and member of AFF.

Thanks everyone for suggestions. Will check availability and costs.

As a matter of interest what would be miles/points required for redeeming star alliance return trip ?

LOL. I have tried to avoid asking question.

I think the answer was buying cheap US Dividend miles, low point/cheap business class flights to USA and then work out cheapest way to get to/from GUM and having an adventure getting there. Some got 2 holidays out of it. Positioning flights to GUM and then use return flights to/from Australia to start each trip.

Why fly direct when you can connect?
