Any recommendations for hotels in both SIN and HKG for AUD200 per night? I'm currently looking at Ovolo Noho in HKG and Furama city centre or Carlton in SIN? Any thoughts? Thanks all.

Where do you want to be in SIN? The Carlton is very central but not on Orchard Rd. Close to town hall, MRT, marina area etc.

Friend has stayed there, said it was fine.

No idea about the Furama.

Thanks Cynicor. Any of the main areas in SIN would be fine, as long as it is near a metro...Orchard, Marina, CBD all good.

Hi Kolo,
I have never stayed at the hotels you have mentioned so I cannot comment on those. I do visit Singapore several times every year and I used to stay at the Novotel on Clarke Quay. This is a brilliant hotel, and I just checked the rates and they are AU$238 a night. Slightly over your budget but I used to stay here all the time. Right on Clarke Quay with all the food and night life, excellent staff and hotel facilities. We now stay at the Mandarin Oriental Singapore in Marina bay which does not meet your budget.

I would recommend spending the $38 extra and stay at the Novotel, it will be well worth it.
In HK I only stay at the Mandarin Oriental in Central so I cant help you there.

I stay at the JJ Hotel in Hong Kong - only really bookable via booking.com these days and often sold out. Have been staying there since 2008 and comes in around AUD100 a night. It's in Wan Chai. It's a good property, safe and secure, but with no lobby or amenities such as pool/room service. (And has glass bathrooms.)

The Novotel in Wan Chai is often less than $200/night when prepaid. I have to say I also like the IBIS in Sheung Wan, for $150-200/night you can get a room with amazing views of the water and Kowloon from the 30th floor. Sheung Wan is also an interesting neighborhood with all the dried seafood shops.

In SIN, my favourite hotels in that price range are the Gallery hotel and the Novotel, both near Clarke Quay.

Le Meridien Cyberport can be had for a under $200 if you don't want to be in Central all the time. Otherwise I've seen competitive pricing on the Harbour Grand at Fortress Hill on Qantas Hotels.

Another vote for Le Meridien Cyberport. The views are great and it is approx 80 HKD taxi or a much cheaper mini bus to HK central.

Gidday Kolo,
last time I was in HK I stayed at the Dorsett in Mongkok. Clean, modern rooms (but quite small- ok if you're out & about most of the day) and a smart clean feel to the lobby area. It's possible to walk into downtown HK or cab it for a few $$. Best of all and depending on time of year, the rooms are around $110.

Hi Kolo,

Wondering if you've booked anything? Need to book a week in SIN in Dec and wondering where to stay. Have usually stayed at Traders and get a price from 180 - 230 AUD. The hotel has always looked a bit tired but the staff are fantastic, the pool area is excellent and there's a supermarket right downstairs. Having said that, after the last stay there I'm tempted to try somewhere else..... I know there is a new Traders on Orchard Rd opening soon but no date yet.

The Holiday Inn Express's are a good option, usually close to $200 and well located at Orchard and Clarke Quay, and of course you earn points ;)

Only been to SIN once many moons ago so I'll leave that to others.

Have you thought about booking an apartment through Tripadvisor?

This coming November I will be staying at the Hotel LKF - huge rooms, great central location for night life - and ended up being around $240pn. [that's for Hong Kong].

I enjoyed Residence @ Singapore Recreation Club. Good location and very nice. Was about SGD200p.n. in GST and service charge.

Not booked yet....In HKG I'm leaning towards the Ibis in Sheung Wan but am tempted by the Dorsett in Mongkok. In SIN I'm leaning towards The Scarlett. Its a little over budget but as an SLH property I have some status. But I've also got some new recommendations over the past day to look into, including Traders!

I guess it's a matter of personal taste... I didn't like the IBIS Sheung Wan at all - bad location, crowded, very basic rooms (view was ok though). Unless you can get it for $60-70 a night (which I did) I would stay in a much better location for under $100 (like Wan Chai for example).

Stayed at the IBIS near opening and didn't mind it. Is a little far from Sheung Wan station, but will be closer to the new Sai Ping station when the Island Line extension opens (I think in early 2015).
Some decent cafes etc around, but it is a bit far from the real tourist areas.

I tried the Scarlet once and it was TERRIBLE. Like so bad. Tiny room run-down room with no windows and worn carpet, on top of what sounded like a night club going late into the night. Maybe I was just unlucky but seriously, would never try it again. Having said that it's location is exceptional if you want to be in Chinatown or CBD.

The Club hotel next door to the Scarlet is much better (although far from excellent) and sometimes has rooms around the rate you're looking at and is a much better choice.

Places for under 200AUD in Hong Kong . If you want to be HK Island side. Traders Hotel is best bang for buck , downside nothing much around hotel but quick and easy to get to Central. V2 Wanchai Hotel is close to bar and restaurants and is also very close to MTR. If you want to be Kowloon side . Luxe Manor while decor is a touch quirky, is good value and right next to Knutsford Terrace so lots of eating and drinking options. Hotel Panorama by Rhombus very close to TST MTR and surrounded by drinking and eating places, also good for the money. Has excellent harbour views on higher floors
Singapore is getting increasingly hard to get good hotels under 200 AUD. Studio M is only place I know in that price range that I have stayed in and could recommend. And the one I know to avoid Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel. While I have never stayed myself I have friends who like the Carlton
