How do the Gold Card Travel Insurance programs work
and how do they compare with taking out your own travel insurance with travel agents. I have tried to read all the rules and regulations, but policies are to hard to understand.

Travel agents have huge mark-ups on the insurance polices they sell. Can be 50% or higher. A better alternative is usually to google and buy your travel insurance on line from a discount provider.

However - as for CCs, the terms and conditions are usually fairly standard. Medical is the big one, and is usually unlimited. Public liability pretty much the same. Other things such as cancellation coverage, travel delay etc etc are again fairly standard. Many of the cc insurance policies now make allowances for travel booked and paid using FF points (and will compensate you for any lost miles that might result of a cancellation etc).

There seem to be a few common underwriters for cc companies - such as Zurich.

The main variance is usually in how much of the ticket you have to put onto the card before you are covered by the insurance.

Earth (for example) requires you to put the full cost of the return tickets ex Australia on the card, ANZ (as another example) only requires you to put $250 of pre-paid travel before cover applies.

Most insurances via CC cover you for a trip of up to 3 months. Earth platinum (an an example) will cover you for 6 months.
