I fly to Asia and UK/Europe mainly and also all over OZ I am platinum with qantas and silver with singapore air, do you guys know what wld be my best option for ff, I was diamond with ansett in the good old days!! The reason i ask i shld pay more attention to my ff but i don't and i have been reading about how ppl are joinging AA ff program, does anyone have any good idea's or is their a better option than QA? Is Asia miles better or?

It really depends on what you want out of your FF program. Are you looking for:
  • Lounge access
  • Priority check-in, baggage, waitlisting etc
  • Extra baggage allowance
  • Free reward flights
  • Upgrades
These things would influence which program is best, as well as the obvious things like regular places visited in Asia and Europe.

Also will make a difference depending on the fare types you normally purchase:
  • Premium cabin (First, Business class)
  • Economy (fully flexible, high value tickets)
  • Discount Economy (cheapest fare you can find)

Hey Nelly

Well sometimes I splurge on business overseas but usually with singapore or last trip i flew business sas form shanghai - london via copenhagen and returned via Bangkok then flew qantas economy back to oz. they are cheaper fares than qa or cathay plus i had my wife and two young children so budget came into it.

i usually travel in disc economy mostly in australia & to overseas mainly

i fly mainly to hong kong, shanghai a lot of internal flights in china. guanzhou qingdao to name a few then in europe paris london and manchester but next year more into italy.

so i figure i fly a lot to get to platinum with disc fares where if u fly business it wld be a lot quicker, the reason i asked mainly was i saw aa you get upgrades for free , i have only had one international upgrade from qantas for free that was it and you guys are the experts so i thght i wld ask..

for me i prefer the upgrades ;
lounges to me don't bother me much to be honest... i wld be happier in business then in the lounge !!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

For upgrades, you will need to be a high-status member of the airline you are flying with. So that takes AA out of the equation for you. And as you note, QF is not generous for operational-upgrades and very expensive for points upgrades (although still one of the best uses of QF FF points).

Using discount economy fares makes it hard to reach the highest status levels in many programs, and some (such as SQ's PPS) require travel in business or first class to earn status.

If you can reach top tier with CX Asia Miles you will be well looked-after, but be careful as to which discount fares actually count. At least QF includes all paid fares as points earning.

Others can probably discuss the *A programs way better than me, so look out for some comments on the merits of SQ KrisFlyer and TG's program. Asiana has some benefits around duration of status once earned.

thx for your comments have to open up business in USA!! to take advantage of AA

i was thinking at looking at Asia miles if anyone knows which is better QF or Asia miles let me know?

Qf now hands out the business class head phones for us platinum plebs in cattle class just to rub it in!!

I've been waiting for eight months for my KrisFlyer points to be credited.

I flew Business Class to a conference in Bangkok via Thai Airways in November 2005. I get lots of apologies and assurances, but no miles credited.

I now fly Qantas and use the Qantas FF program.

G'day Ray

Well I am putting all the documents in today so see how I go with getting my points will let you know

*A has a better network coverage in asia than one world, although neither have anything within China. Shanghai Airlines is joining *A soon, as is Air China. Meanwhile Dragon Air is tied up with One World so potentially may be a future member.

Flying SQ on the cheapest fares won't get much as their most discounted fares are non mileage earning on any scheme.

As well as PPS (for first/business pax), SQ does also have the traditional silver and gold tiers. Gold is 50k miles (on your travel patterns easier to attain than OW equivalent Emerald). However if you fly Thai a bit, they may be a better program since can get 2 year status and they are freer with upgrades (plus Thai fares tend to be quite a bit cheaper than SQ).

If you are likely to travel within europe a lot on the alliance of your choice, then that is a further reason to go for *A IMHO. With one world the hubs are at the edges of Europe (LHR, HEL, MAD) and so a lot of european travel involves a choice between outside alliance or much backtracking. Whereas *A hubs are in the middle of europe (FRA, MUC, ZRH, GVA, VIE, WAW, BCN, LHR, CPH, OSL, ARN, MXP, FCO, HEL, ZAG, LJU) making it much easier to get around.
