It was a real pain accumulating 1,400 SCs this year. All 20 SCs at a time.

Congrats! I know your pain - but not as bad as you given I'm in Perth so 20SCs for discount economy and a wholesome 40 for full economy when flying to Sydney...

I'm hoping that I'll only have to do enough flying for SG to get a comp to WP the following year. I'm doing a RTW trip in the year AFTER my WP runs out so I need WP for two years to really reap in the benefits.

You get more WP benefits by flying more. Could you split your RTW up (like serfty is doing) so that requalify in 2 member years?

1st part of RTW (this member year)
separate paid or award ticket round-trip back to australia
2nd part of RTW (following member year)

CX more than others recognises the OW status.

IMHE I have found that of the OW airlines, CX has most consitently recognised me as a top-level member and provided upgrades on a regular basis. I have flown BA a lot, for example, who "say" they welcome, but experience is they are only interested in their own.

It is possible that CX treats their Marco Polo memebers even better, but as a oneworld emerald, I have found CX the most accommodating, helpful, recognising of the alliance members (mine is thru QF).

In my limited experience with CX, and from listening to others, CX is known to offer operational upgrades to OneWorld Emeralds on a more regular basis that other OneWorld airlines.

And one other that as a mistake booking by my TA who booked me in A class for HKG-LAX on a DONE4 8) .

2 from 3 for Cathay for me. [2 from 4 actually, but one was a codeshare flight, so not relevant]

On the one where I wasn't upgraded, the CSM was extremely friendly and did the following.
1) "Hello Mr Mal. Great to have you onboard. Let me know if I can help with anything, or call on X who is the head cabin crew for this section".
2) Comes back a little later. "I've got a better seat for you if you're happy to move back a few rows"
(The 2 pax next to me were already looking at me strangely from the first comment, then at the 2nd comment they were really looking at me strangely!).
3) CSM moves me back a few rows into a spare 3 seat row that I have all to myself.


Cathay are great. Some of their planes aren't as comfy as the Qantas longhaul ones (eg no winglets, J seats are like domestic QF J seats), but overall they are a great airline.

Another 6 CX flights coming up in Mar/Apr, so will see what happens then.

Mine were Y to J, although one was Y to J service in F cabin on a 747.

I have had 3 from 4 op upgrades on CX... All from Y to J. First one was when I was a Ansett Global Rewards Member (little or no status) from HKG to LHR. The other two were last year between HKG-BKK vv when I was QF SG.

So yes... I really enjoy CX, but just not the points earn in whY!

As a QFF Plat for several years I can tell you with authority that if there are any other benefits I have totally failed to find them! and having been seated in 48C for 22 hours yesterday I can tell you that the 'preferential seating option' is d@mn limited too!

Off topic but as a QF Silver I find that I almost always get my preferred seating option!
