Beatles on iTunes

The uber geeks on macrumors.com were not happy that this was the big announcement on the apple website...

I think it is a big deal in that Apple have negotiated through one of their biggest contract issues - may bode well for apple TV etc...

The mistake I made was to think that the Beatles catalog was owned by Michael Jackson, which made me rather unhappy, something that wouldn't be a difficult negotiation with his passing. But then I realised MJ had Elvis not the Beatles.

Anyway, either way it is a sign of good things to come. Getting the beatles is also a big thing worthy of the big announcement.

AFAIK MJ did own a 50% stake in the Beatles catalogue along with Sony. Great news that their now on iTunes :)

I might have been correct after all.  Does that mean I can make my comment about MJ's family being quick to sell off his assets?

SWMBO seemed to think that Mccartney still have a stake.

Are you a member there? I used to be a demi-god.

I think he does. It comes down to a lot of people saying yes ultimately.

The $259 box set is enticing for it's extra features, for the whole collection and per album. However it comes with 256 songs and I already have them (my collection spans 450+). The better quality and extras only mean so much.

Sony/ATV own the publishing rights (where MJ fits in)
EMI and Apple Corps own the recordings - I think these are who had to agree to itunes selling them
Mccartney and the others earn from their songwriter share (and through Apple Corp I guess)

And yet again the Australian public is paying over the odds as it is only $149 US on iTunes. Might be time to reload the stateside account ;)

I saw that. A $110 premium and a recent Apple price drop for the Mac mini happened virtually everywhere, but Australia. No love here.

And you can buy them on CD stateside for $129.

Digital = cheaper? If only.

I'd much rather the CD's, rip them in a format that I want (AAC is fine, but it's my choice at least then) as well as the fact I have physical media in case 'cough happens' to my computer:)

The Digital Box Set comes with an iTunes LP for each album (which if you haven’t tried the iTunes LP format is actually pretty immersive. Did so for a Muse album myself) and I believe an iTunes LP for the whole set, plus a few video extras. So yes, there’s a little premium, but you actually get things you can’t get on a CD ;)

Sure, you get the LP format (yes i'm familiar with it, I only use Mac's and iTunes everywhere).

For the extra money, a few videos and fancy things do not substitute for hard-media.

Content = cheap. Media = far more costly. They're still gouging us.

You say poh-tay-to... ;)

(not that it's really an issue, if you were a Beatles fan, you'd have the CD's already and have ripped them into iTunes years and years ago).

I just checked, 478 songs. The only difference is some of mine are in 128kbps and 256kbps would be preferable.
