Be Aware! Qantas double points Trap ["Discount Economy is 'not' Economy"]

AS per Bundy Bear, I got the sth america email too (just yesterday). I skim read it and understood it to be double points on any economy ticket, as anyone would if they didn't absolutely trawl. Very misleading by Qantas.

Apart from the ACA route, absolutely bash the social media angle - should get a response as it will be highlighting their dishonesty during the actual sales campaign.

Thanks for suggestion, I am not active social media person. I filed case with fair trading and not eligible for ACA anymore, I forwarded case number to Qantas and didn't get any response, won't approach them further before fair trading response, this post is to get common understanding of promotion and remind everyone before booking tickets.

Why aren't you eligible for the ACA?

Why aren't you eligible for the ACA?
The first question for ACA compliant is "Have you also lodged complaint with a government regulatory body (whether pending or finalized) and/or have you filed a claim in a court or tribunal", if the answer is Yes, then it is not eligible.

From memory, it appears on the e-ticket but that’s way after you’ve paid for a non-refundable tic, hardly cricket

It appears on the plain text ticket (issued only via the call centre if you have a manual booking request), the colourful one doesn't show anything bar the class of service. MMB has everything though at that point for a non-refundable fare its pretty much too late

It usually appears on e-tickets, still it is too late, that is annoy part and you won't know how much points you will get before booking, maybe the only option is to cross check the price at Airline's website. It is different for this double points promotion, it is more like bait marketing if Qantas intends to do so.

it is more like bait marketing

Definitely. You can't promise something simple and straight-forward in big print and then negate it in the fine print. Misleading and deceptive advertising.

Has anyone else had one of these offers and had either the same experience, or no issue? I'm honestly surprised that Qantas would intend it to not apply to sale fares. They're usually pretty clear when they're excluded.

Could they just be backing their initial mistake in this one case? It feels like someone's screwed up somewhere, whether that's IT, the people who wrote the email T&C, the call centre contacts....

I agree with you that it is screw up somewhere, also a good opportunity to see how consumer protection works in Australia.

My previous query on whether "flexible economy" is eligible.

"
May I know if Flex Economy (class B/H/Y) is eligible for this promotion if you intend to limit it to Economy only? I did read important info and term and condition carefully, just didn't realize the booking class "trap" for different Economy, it could be a good lessons learn to share with frequent flyer communities.
"

and after 6 days with response doesn't explain anything

"I appreciate that you've been waiting a while for my answer, so please accept my apologies for the delay. We appreciate your interest in line with the Double Qantas points promotion. I'd like to confirm that the booking class or alpha codes ( B, H and Y ) is under the Flexible Economy as per airline earning table. I've also provided the link of the earning table for your convenience below;

I hope your next Qantas experience will be a more positive and enjoyable one"

This is very interesting and very sneaky.

Has anyone (besides Athleticfrog who is discussing a particular case with them) who has received the targeted promotion queried QANTAS about whether Discount Economy would receive Double Status? It would be interesting to hear their reply when asked in general regarding this promotion.

On the public (not targeted) DSC offers, I have definitely received the DSC on sale economy fares on at least 3 occasions within the last year. So this exclusion seems super sneaky.

Agree which is why I'd be interested in hearing their reply regarding eligibility of Discount Economy in general for this targeted promotion, to see if they give the same answer as they've given Athleticfrog about his specific case.

I fly 26-30 flights a year with QANTAS not including personal trips and over the past 8 months I've had 3 or 4 issues with their staff (phone/email/chat all saying different things and digging themselves deeper holes (not going to hijack the thread with details). To make matters worse it looks like I won't even make gold this year (which is laughable considering the amounts spent) because of the problems I've had with them (QC member as well as gold). Looking at taking my business to Virgin sadly as it's just been a struggle that I don't need. I just like to book and get what I'm supposed to as stated, not have to spend hours checking fine print and contacting them to confirm. They're getting beyond ridiculous and their FF program is no longer rewarding.

Flexible economy is also not eligible based on Qantas response.

"We're sorry that it's taking a little longer than anticipated to look into your query. Upon checking on the previous promotion that you registered, please note that the Flexible Economy booking class or alpha code ( B, H and Y ) is not eligible to earn towards the Double Qantas Points for July 2019 promotion. For future promotions and for the full details of eligibility, you may refer under the "Important Information" of each promotion you wish to register."

Ok, so which economy selection when booking is left? I feel like something is being missed here.

My booking from SYD to Dallas was Discount Economy which didn't get double points, return leg got it which is economy. I was just curious about exact meaning of "Economy" in the promotion email, then asked if "Flexible Economy" is eligible.

Base on everyone's understanding here it means economy class/seat, while it means "economy fare type" per Qantas points earning table.
