Well I have been lucky enough at the last minute to snag an Avios redemption (9k + 35 quid) for a return trip to FRA tomorrow on the first day of service on the BA A380.

Stay tuned for some pictures / mini TR. It will be standard catering (e.g. a wrap) but I'll try and post as many details as possible about the boarding, etc.

Looking forward to it. Lots of pics please.

Had a look at the seat map... This looks like the best fitted out a380 for me/anyone who flies economy..

The day started early as I had Mrs Flashback wake me not long after she awoke. Although I was in no rush to get to the airport to experience the lacklustre new catering in BA's Galleries Club lounge, I did want to experience the dreaded midday changeover.

After a quick check of AFF and FT it was time to have a quick shower and breakfast and think about heading off. Thanks Mrs Flashback! I had forgotten one minor detail. My passport. When doing such a short turnaround on such a short flight... Coming from Perth makes you forget that you need your passport on these kind of trips! Having awoken to rumbling thunder and rain, as I made my way to the high street to catch the bus to LHR (£1.40 each way) I decided to take a snap to remember just how coughpy the morning started!

The forecast for FRA was a lovely 34 but given the quick turnaround and the fact I wasn't leaving the airport I decided against wearing the much unloved pair of shorts aboard a BA flight. I mean, come on! This is how us Aussies dress in summer. Oops. Autocorrect tried to change Aussies to Sissies.

Having just received news that the first A380 flight, BA902 had landed safely in FRA excitement was starting to mount. There was no way you'd get me out of bed to catch the 6.45am departure and plus to do so would have been close to £400 return. I'll take my 9000 Avios and £35 thanks all the same! It was time to head off so the tablet, Nook, camera and various chargers were packed into my small backpack and it was time to make a move.

I checked the TFL bus stop tracker and my bus wasn't showing at all. A few minutes passed and concern started to mount. At least I had plenty of time anyway I thought! No worries, within 5 minutes of the scheduled departure time the bus finally arrived and I boarded and took up my standard seat in the exit row.

Next stop, LHR T3 for a connection on the HEX to BA's beloved T5.

Almost at LHR and the weather looks to be clearing.

It looks like the first flight left from a C gate so £15 to use at Starbucks will be a nice bonus if we leave from there too. All you need to do is show your boarding pass. Easy!

Latest news from the pax aboard BA903 sitting in FRA is that they are being held for 40 mins due to thunderstorms in London. Current knock on delays for my flights is an hour.

Edit: 44 mins now. The big bird in FRA has pushed back and they are on their way!

Lots of pictures to come. Wow, what an awesome flight home, some great views of London including the KIA Oval where the final Ashes test will be played. You may need to wait till tomorrow for me to finish this in detail ;)

Having just arrived at LHR T1&3 I had to then catch the free HEX connection to T5.

I arrived reasonably early (around 10:30) given the flight was not till 14:30, but I wanted to sample the differing catering BA had in it's lounges as I tend to typically go through LHR/LGW only during the pre-8am breakfast spread.

2 steps back, check-in wasn't needed as I had already OLCI'd and had my BP sitting in the BA App on my phone so it was straight off to fast track security which saw me through in probably just under a minute! I got there just at the right time with there being no line, however after I went through they then opened up all our lanes to the general public and suddenly the line was 30 deep. Phew, made it just in time! Having entered through the north part of T5 I decided to take a few more steps and enter the Galleries Club North lounge.

The hot items are removed at 9.30am so on arrival I was greeted with toast, pastries, porridge (yeh yeh, hot, I know! But the bacon butties are removed at 9.30am ;)), fruit, yoghurt, etc. The usual spreads sans bacon butties basically. Did the job and was enough for a late breakfast to fill the gap. The lounge was quite busy when I arrived but by 12 was really starting to fill up.

The lunch items had been placed out which considered of a nice salad bar (5 bean salad, baby new potatoes salad, spicy cous cous (delicious!) and your usual salads), some hot dishes (pretty ordinary....) and baked potatoes, amongst other things. Again, did the job and filled the gap. The North lounge had now transformed into a zoo so it was time to move. I headed over to the Galleries Club South lounge and squatted there for an hour before meeting up with another FTer just before we had to leave to get to the gate. Being the A380 we were on the C gates (C63) so it was a bit of a trek - we had to get moving pretty quickly!

After all that we didn't end up having time to nip through Starbucks and claim our moneys worth, so it was straight onto the plane with both classes boarding through the 1 door, being handed a letter explaining that we would be travelling on the A380 as we boarded.

Upon boarding the CSM greeted us and asked whether we were surprised to be on the big bird, to which I replied with "No, not at all ... I booked this flight yesterday because it was the A380's first day!" to which she chuckled and then responded with "Ah! You must be one of those FTers. Yes, I read, I know where you guys are sitting!". All good fun.

Club Europe (intra-Euro business class) was today using the Club World (international business class) cabin and Euro Traveller was using the World Traveller cabin. I was in 20H (exit, aisle) so it was a short trek through the CW cabin through to ET and off to my seat.

The view from the exit row .. no window!

The main thing I noted about BA's incarnation of the big bird is that there are cigarette trays (never noticed them on QF?) and no personal air vents. Typical BA!

I had a good chat with the passenger sitting in the window seat who was completely unaware that she would be flying on the A380 and in fact it was her first time! We had a good chat and with the flight being so short, it was soon time to land - of course after first having a "snack" (small bag of crisps) and a sparkling water with lemon and ice. It was a fairly uneventful flight going over, most of the excitement was going to have to wait till the flight back!

And an empty F cabin? I wonder if F was bookable? ;)

Cabin was empty, no chance of booking it - the idea is that the first flight to LAX will then be "special". After a busy weekend, I now finally have time to sit down and finish this so should have the rest up shortly.
