Hi all
I am currently planning for a trip to Thailand in late October/early November. I am flying SYD-BKK pn 27 Oct (arriving 10:30PMish). I need to travel to Pattaya on Wednesday 1 Nov will spend Wed & Thu night in Pattaya (for a wedding), travelling back to BKK on Friday 3 Nov for a 7PMish flight back to SYD.

We are thinking of just have a lazy 5 nights and 4 1/2 days in BKK - staying somewhere nice in the city and doing the sights of BKK. Do people have any suggestions of hotels that I could look for deals in? My budget is about A$1200 for the BKK hotel and I want luxury if possible. Obviously I will look on lastminute and the hotel websites for actual deals - I just need some starting point suggestions for where we could stay. I guess we want to be somewhere that its easy to get to the key sites - so we can see "real" BKK and then retreat to our air conditioned luxury for the evenings.

Cheers

Simon

We often stay in Bangkok to break up a trip.We enjoy staying on the river. To me the best hotel is the peninsula.Until 31/10 you can get a superior room for $US170 a night. These are the worst rooms they have.We usually take this and the rooms are much better than most hotels best rooms. The service here is fantastic.
Because we now have status with Hilton we have stayed at the recently opened but not new Hilton Millenium. If you dont have status you can get an executive river suite for $US194.This does give you access to the executive lounge so breakfast as well as a very good evening coughtails. The cheapest rooms here are ~$US120 but only worthwhile if you have honors status and likely to be upgraded.
Although a lot of people will say staying on the river puts you a long way from anything if you are there on leisure this is not a problem. Both these hotels have free boat transport to the skytrain station on the other side of the river and this will get you close to most of the tourist sites in Bangkok.
I can sit for hours watching the activity on the river.also getting the Chao-praya ferries makes another interesting and cheap way of getting around.

$1200 will get you a very long way staying in BKK hotels.

I agree with drron's suggestions. River hotels are good for tourists and relaxing, although if there for business, it isn't the best spot.

The Hilton had a few opening jitters but I believe most of them are resolved now. That would be my preferred river hotel, but it isn't the best one on the river.

There are some much nicer hotels such as the Peninsula and maybe the Shangri la and a few others. I have only stayed in the Hilton and Sheraton on the river.

Other choices include the Conrad and Sheraton Grande Sukhimit (spelling again!) which are more in Bangkok proper. They are both near the skytrain as well.

BKK is a nice city, although very polluted and steamy hot. I enjoy my visits there due to it being a cheap and friendly place to visit.

Personally I prefer the Sukhumvit area in BKK. You have easy access to the BTS (skytrain) and MRT (underground railway). In this area you will also find the Landmark, JW Marriot, the Westin Grande, the Sheraton Grande, Amari Boulevard just to name a few of the better hotels. You would also save a lot of money on taxi fares.

If you are looking to do some shopping then a visit to Phloen Chit or Chit Lom area would be ideal. I have also found MBK shopping complex (Mah Book Krong) to be an interesting visit. Patpong market is worth a visit during the day, then there is also the floating market on the Chao Phraya River and Chatuchak markets at Mo Chit which is close to Don Muang. Most of these are located on the skytrain route except the floating market which would require a taxi trip.

An unlimited all day pass on the BTS skytrain costs 100 baht.

If you are interested in temples a visit to Ayutthaya, about 50kms out of BKK, would be recommended. You can join a tour where you are escorted there by coach and then return on a boat cruise. Not very expensive and you can book when you are in BKK. If you have a couple of days to kill a tour of the River Kwai and Burmese border would also be enjoyable.
