hey kevin, i'm in bkk on the 27/6 and leaving 1/7 :-|
Shame...Can you give me a ground report as I'm still undecided about the trip. Is your travel insurance covering you?

I flew backwards on BA10 last year. 62K upstairs. Excellent seat, very private. Upstairs is much better less noisy, no kids.

Hi Guys,

I have been in and out of Bangkok all week. Everything is completely fine and I am enjoying it.

Today I took a tour around the previous red shirt zone which is open completely again. I have compiled a lot of photos on my blog here, mostly of damaged buildings but also just around that area. You can take a look here, if interested: Bangkok - June 2010 (Redshirt free zone for now) | Dazz81 Planes and Travel Blog

I would not hesitate to advise people to return to Bangkok. The airport is an absolute breeze and everything in town is open (that's not been fire damaged).

Cheers,

Dazz81

Thanks for that Dazz.We will be returning early August.interesting that we found a NaRaYa store here in Macau-so mrsdrron went in and spent my Pacatas supporting a Thai business.

Re- hotels to stay, If you can afford it The Mandarin Oriental (La Grande Dame) is IMHO still one of the best hotels in the world.

This hotel sets the standard for service. Having a meal on the terrace by the river and or tea in the Authors Lounge is one of lifes great pleasures.

Do yourself a favour and at least check it out.

Just watched an Al Jazeera interview with the GM of the Four Seasons saying occupancy is less than 10% and that rates have never been lower.

I had a look for the dates that I will be in Bangkok and 27-30 this month and prices are starting from 6500THB+ room only. Seems a bit price-y even though the GM is saying rates have never been lower. Anyway, will be back at the SGS/LM at this stage.

Great to know as I have a trip to Bangkok planned for July 7

Hi guys,

The australian government today again downgraded the travel warning for Thailand (excluding the far south, which has been Do Not Travel for a long time), now back to 'High Degree of Caution'. Which is where it was before all this started.

Cheers

For those heading to BKK in the next few weeks, there are some reallllyyy nice rates going at the Banyan Tree Bangkok - on club level - Grande Suite room for around ~130aud inclusive of taxes. This is about 65% off the regular BAR.

Also, they have one of my fav rooftop restaurants there as well Vertigo :) Price-y but well worth it :) :) :)

For early July, I'm not getting rates at this low level (Hotel website) Alan; which website are you looking at to get these rates?

There were a few websites earlier today, now there's only one left www.skoosh.com

Eg. 7-11 July $109usd per night inclusive ; Club floor Grande Suite with breakfast (2)

found it Alan! Ta; Do you think it is a mistake price as all the different rooms seem to be the same price? The same room on the hotel website costs ~AUD$240 / night:shock:

Have you booked the room yet?

I'm seriously thinking about it! I already have 2 award nights at the Conrad BKK (hopefully will be upgraded to club floor as Hilton Gold), and have another 3 nights at Plaza Athenee, Royal Meridien on "cash and points" rate (USD45 + 2800 SPG pts per night) with a guaranteed club floor upgrade for an additional 1500 SPG pts per night....I could save my points (both Hilton and SPG) for another day, and take advantage of this cheap Banyan rate...decisions, decisions

Having stayed at the Royal Meridien (with lounge access etc as a PLT) late last year I would probably save your points and go to the Banyan Tree where the rates get you Club access plus breakfast in the main restaurant. Also you get a suite and the photos I have seen on Tripadvisor, it loooooks very nice inside and the views are gorgeous!

Those good rates are available for the dates I am in Bangkok but the lure of Starwood's free weekend night promo .... is making me not stay there, for now.

OK Alan....couldn't resist (will save my HH and SPG pts for another time.... booked a Club Grand Suite with b'fast for 2 for 5 nights for USD549.15. From what I've read, there is free WiFi in the lounge but not sure about in room internet. Hope the AUD doesn't tank overnight against the USD! Reassuringly, I can cancel up to 5 days prior to arrival for only a USD10 fee:mrgreen: Thanks for the heads up:idea:
