I'm flying to San Diego on a Virgin Australia booked ticket. They put me on the flight from LA to San Diego with their partner Delta. I had called a few weeks ago to ask what the baggage allowance would be, and I was told that it was 2 23 kilo bags plus one extra since I'm platinum. I asked if that same allowance would be applied on my return flight, since I have to check in with Delta in San Diego. I was told that yes, Delta would give me the same Virgin Australia platinum baggage allowance.

So in the meantime, I've let family members know and they have sent several packages to me at the hotel. I now need to have all 3 bags!

But I just emailed the platinum Velocity address to ask them as well so that I could have it in writing, and they've called and told me that no, Delta will not honour the platinum baggage allowance. I have no idea how much extra they are going to charge me, but I'm pretty upset given that I would have arranged to be within the Delta baggage allowance if I had been given that information from the first Velocity representative.

Can anyone tell me what the real policy is? I am crossing my fingers that I will get the 3 bags free when I check in to come back to Canberra.

Since this is a trip to the USA, the MSC with be the marketing carrier of the first Transpacific and that will be VA's and the allowance would hold for the entire booking.

The only catch is if VA have not filed with the relevant entity¹ information regarding the additional allowance for it's 'platinum' flyers, in which case it won't come up on Delta's computers when you check in on the return.

¹ I doubt that VA have indeed made such filing to ATPCO.

DL or VA flight number(s) back?

I know that if its a VA number there should be no reason you won't get your full allowance...
I specifically booked my returns to Aus on VA numbers for this reason.

Interline and Codeshare Partners

Virgin Australia international checked baggage allowance and infant baggage allowance applies for all Virgin Australia Codeshare flights. Checked baggage allowance limits, infant baggage allowance and acceptance of sporting equipment for Interline partners will depend on the operating carrier’s allowance for each sector.

EDIT: Serfty beat me to it...

So what do I do if it doesn't come up on Delta's computers when I check in on the return?

You may be SOL.

You could plead you had the allowance on the way over and this allowance should continue for the entire journey under IATA resolution 302.

Hopefully you do not get stuck with a "Computer Says NO" type of 'jobsworth'.

Sorry to drag up and old thread.... but

I've flown MEL-SYD-LAX-SJC with the LAX-SJC a Delta codeshare with Alaska. Doing the same on return, and I'll have two items to check in, what happens with codeshares of VA codeshare partners?

in my experience, if the entire trip is on one booking your bags will be checked to your final destination. On return, you may have to spend some time explaining the extra baggage allowance (I suggest a printout of the website), but again, they should be able to check your bags right through if all on one booking.
On the other hand, if LAX-SJC is on a different booking you will prob have to pay for your bags.
