Hi everyone. My husband & I will be flying to SFO\LA\Vegas\Miami\NYC\Barcelona\London\HK\SYD

Our ticket is RTW with oneworld. Flying with a combination of airlines. The Qantas consultant that I purchased the tixs from advised that we each get 2 bags @ 32kg per bag as we are travelling to the USA. We will therefore also get the same baggage allowance for ALL segment of the trip.

Sounds really too good to be true however Qantas website confirm the same.

Does anyone have experience/advice in this regard? I was going to print off the baggage confirmation off Qantas website & show it to the check-in counter if I get any grief. Should I have to pay excess baggage because the information is wrong, I am going to be on Qantas back & have them reimburse me when I return to Sydney!

You have been informed correctly.

Having posted that, however, I must warn that there have been reports of the occasional times where lower weight limits (eg 20Kg) per piece have been enforced (incorrectly) by agents of varying arlines on check in.

Other than that, what type of oneWORLD fare are you on? One World Explorer or Global Explorer? I ask that, because with a OneWORLD explorer you can have up to 20 flights in the one itinery. e.g. Looking at you route above, after Landing back in SYD, you can still do (within a year of the original departure) something like SYD-PER-ADL-BNE-SYD for only the cost of the fuel levies and taxes.

Thanks for your advices on the baggage. I don't know which oneworld fare I am on....I will check with Qantas tomorrow. I wasn't aware I can do domestic flights after I return back to SYD. That will be very handy indeed!

!

If using a One World Explorer or Global Explorer ticket you are entitled to 2 pieces allowance regardless of whether you visit the USA; on other tickets, the consultant is correct in that you get 2 pieces for all sectors

Where she is incorrect is in stating that each piece can be 32 Kg. Not all carriers offer 32Kg as the piece weight. AA, for example, allows a maximum piece weight of 23Kg and will quite correctly charge an excess for bags greater than this weight

Check with the carriers on the itinerary and verify what their piece max weight allowances are

Serfty, Qantas confirmed that my fare is oneWorld however once I land back in Sydney that's it - my tix expires. She has never heard what you are suggesting is possible.... Can you provide me with more ammunition? My complete travel details below:

SYD - SFO (QF)
LA - Vegas (QF code but operated by American Eagle for AA)
Vegas - Miami (AA)
Miami - NYC (AA)
NYC - London (BA)
London - Barcelona (BA)
Barcelona - London (BA but operated by Iberia)
London - HK (Cathay)
HK - SYD (Cathay)

If it is the OW Explorer, there is nothing in the fare rules to prohibit it. If booking an ATW ticket, I would suggest going to the AA ATW desk since they are v knowledgable in the product and you will have no issues trying to do it. As a sideline, you will even save money on fuel fines

What is the fare basis xONE4 or xGLOBnn? (where x is LL, LH, D or A).

If it's an xONE4 you can do as I indicated; the rules changed sometime last year allowing this.

For more information, please read this FT link for the oneWORLD forum which explains plenty:

Is it a OneWorld Explorer ticket (fare basis LONE4), or is it a OneWorld Global Explorer (fare basis LLGLOB29 or LHGLOB29). Ask the agent to tell you the "fare basis" that has been used for the ticket.

If it's a Global Explorer, then they are correct and you cannot continue after returning to the point of origin. If its a OneWorld Explorer, then they are incorrect and you can continue after returning to the point of origin and I have done that on several occasions. Its its OneWorld Explorer as them to quote the fare rule that prohibits the continuation - no such rule exists in the current OneWorld Explorer fare rules. It was removed from the fare rules back in November 2004.

If flying via the US, you get the same generous baggage allowance for the entire trip, even if a particular leg doesn't go through the US, such as London-Singapore-Sydney. The checkin folk should know this. I've done three RTW trips over the past 18 months and had no hassle at checkin, except once at Canberra when I pointed out the US leg, even though I was heading the other way initially.

American Airlines has lowered max bag weight to 23kg, and other airlines are likely to follow suit. Not only does it save them money, it's an OH&S thing.

My preference is to travel east-west, i.e. reverse the order of your travel. That way I get longer days, and I'm not getting up before dawn to take a flight that gets me to my destination after dark. Flying with the sun I generally get a mid-morning flight and arrive mid-afternoon, so I can have a relaxed journey.

And welcome to the forum. The advice you will get here from experienced travellers is pure gold. I'm a newbie compared to some of the folk around, and I have learnt a great deal just from keeping my ears open and asking a judicious question now and then.

Thanks everyone for your invaluable advice. :D

Spoken to the travel agent & what do you know....I do get an additional interstate trip upon my return which I have to take before the end of Oct 07. Pretty sure I can manage that! I'm just a bit annoyed that he hasn't pointed it out to me when I book the tixs as I now incurr an additional charge of $244 per tix. ($150 is for the difference between the new & old fares & the rest I believe is the tax & cancellation charges). Nevertheless it is still cheaper than a return tix to Darwin from Syd.

There are no cancellation charges specifically with an xONE4. If you have not yet departed on the first sector, there are NO ticket reissue fees either.

You may have to pay the +++'s (taxes) for the additional sectors but these should not be $244.

If your itinerary was ticketed and there has been a price increase since then you may have to pay the fare difference. (I am not aware of any)
