Baggage allowance on QF/BA fare

Hi there,

I've booked a RTW trip on QF/BA which I believe is actually two combined fares. Not sure of the fare basis sorry.

Itinerary:
PER-SYD-SFO (QF)
open segment
JFK-YUL (American Eagle)
YUL-LHR (BA)
LHR-SIN (QF)
SIN-PER (QF)

I'm wondering what the baggage limit will be? The JFK-YUL segment is the only one not operated by QF or BA but is QF codeshare. I spoke to Qantas staff and they assured me that 32kg (2 pieces) was the allowance for the entire trip. I believe this might be true for most of the segments, however for the trip into Montreal it would seem that 23kg is the maximum limit (from the AA website):

I'm assuming the Qantas allowance of 32kg is a free allowance....

It depends on whether it is on 1 ticket

If it is one ticket , then the allowance for the whole trip would be 2 pieces ; the AA max weight allowances is 23Kg per piece and the BA will be 23Kg from February

You are not entitled to > 23Kg if the carrier limit is less.

I called up qantas again and this time was told that the limit would be 23kg for the whole trip, as the limit for BA and AA is 23kg even though it is 32kg for qantas.

3 different answers from qantas? I believe that's still within the margins for seamless customer support.

Ah well. At least I have an idea what's going on.

Yes, it is only 23kg per piece but as you are going via US that is 2 pieces in Y, thus a total of 46kg, well above the normal 20/30 kg allowed by Qantas.

Its all easy

You are allowed 2 Pieces. The weight allowance per piece is based on carrier. QF piece allowance is 32Kg, BA (from Feb) and AA is 23 Kg

Keep to within 23Kg if you wanna avoid excess fees. AA allows overweight ( 23-32 Kg) for $50 (iirc) ... BA will not

in J, BA will ( I believe ) allow you 3 Pieces of 23 Kg so check BAs MMB

In the great indecisiveness that is BA, they are adjusting their implementation of the new baggage limits

As from 13 Feb, the allowances are changing to the piece based system of

1PC Economy
2PC WT+
3PC J
3PC F

however until end of september, each piece may weigh 32Kg rather than the 23Kg previously mentioned

Sadly though the J limit is still at two pieces for AA - seems strange that premium pax dont get extra allowance...

Just a silly question and i know i travel light usually only 13-15kgs on shorter trips and a couple more kg max on longer trips but why would you want more than 3 bags ? and how would you move them all around ?

I am of course assuming these are return trips, if your moving country then i can see why more is better, or maybe working 6 months somewhere and living in a serviced apartment or similar.

For me the object is always to travel as light as possible , and thats wearing one pair of shoes and 2 others in checked !

Three pair of shoes! Isn't that a bit extravagant?

When travelling to the USA, I usually just leave with the shoes on my feet and buy a second pair of shoes while I am there. I can only wear one pair at a time anyway.

Somehow Mrs NM does not understand my shoe requirement theory .

And even with 3 pairs (size 11) i still manage below 15kg.

- I usually wear a pair of hiking/walking shoes (columbia/colorado etc) with my jeans, thats for casual wearing.
- Work shoes, need them to wear with work pants
- Runners (i like to be casual when i can like shorts/t-shirt, and also if i get motivated enough gym or walking)

I find you can fit all sorts of things in shoes when packing, toiletries and things like deorderant fit really well in a shoe ! (bagged in plastic of course)

Back on topic - if all flights have QF numbers even the JFK-YUL then you would be bound by the QF limits would you not ? (you would think so but keep reading..)
Which as its a US trip all on one ticket ? or even it its 2 tickets split by the open segment and all QF flight number then the answer would be...

2 peices (Business/Economy: 2 pieces Total dimensions* of the 2 pieces must not exceed 270cm (106in) with no 1 piece exceeding 158cm (62in)) not exceeding 32kg

But if you read the fine print it says Qantas operated flights, so then you would be even though they are QF codeshare you would be bound by each individual carriers requirements for the segment, is that correct ?
And does oneworld status make any difference ?

That really cough i feel. But you should determine how much your taking and if its less than 20kg then just sleep easy and not worry (unless American Eagle has some really small limits like jetstar/virgin)

this is the "i'm trying not to worry person" re trip o/s. I'm flying the american eagle flt. yul-jfk. Does anyone know for sure if american eagle will have a prob. with two checked large (allowed) size luggage. Going o/s for three mo's so not able to make it one case. cheers, tp

I am not aware of the allowance being different to the normal 2 x 50Lb on Beagle flights

Travelling light for me is purely about the hand luggage. Most of my trips have a combination of business (conferences) and casual (dinnners, visits to family) and with my travel to US/UK its always the reverse weather so I have to pack for cold and hot.

On the shoes front I have cut back to three pairs (incl on feet) and resigned myself to the fact that I wontbe going to the gym.

Also when travelling there is a fair amount of delivering and collectin gifts and snack foods I just love Rufflees Sour Cream and Onion Chips). I have a driver pick me up from home/airport so I dont have to deal with lots of problematic bags. The major problem is teh hotel rooms not having space for my stuff in NY.

Speaking of different answers from different QF phone operators, I got three varied responses from three of them today. I have a LONE4 coming up on 1 May. I'll be flying with QF, CX, IB, BA, EI and AA. I was told (1) on QF and IB flights 2 x 32kg, AA, EI and BA 2 x 23kg; (2) 2 piece system, 2 x 32kg on all airlines; (3) with QF up to 32kg but all other partner airlines don't allow that much so best to think of 2 x 23kg. Incidentally, number 2 operator just phoned me back to say she'd made a mistake and the allowance is the allowance that is the most restrictive of all the airlines on your itinerary. In my case, it is apparently EI with a restriction of 2 x 20kg. So in effect, four varying responses from three operators. Does anyone have any idea what it really is? I'm QP Silver flying on a single booking.

If travelling economy it is 2 pieces ; maximum weight per bag is the limit allowed by the airline for which you are checking in with

If travelling business or 1st, there it is the same as above except that if checking in with BA, 3 pieces are permitted

Now that's extravagant.

Seriously though - 3 pairs might sound like a lot, but for a 1-2 week work trip I think it's perfectly reasonable.

1 x pair black leather shoes for work
1 x pair casual shoes for wearing out to dinner, on the weekends etc...
1 x pair joggers for gym/running

No other way to do it really, unless I want to give up the exercise (which I don't, especially when eating in the US! )

Really on a two-three week trip if wearing business shoes you should take two pairs. that way the leather can rest between being worn and increase the life of the shoes. I have two pairs of almost identical black shoes and alternate most days.

And yes I have a very very sad existence
