For international, it is a must otherwise can not get on the plane. Can't reserve it until the baby is born.

But domestic, is that an issue? esp Melb to Syd only?

Thanks for your input/experience :)

Nope, short domestic legs are great up the back. Easy access to bathroom, easy to get up and chat or stretch legs. And there are no bassinets on most short haul single aisle aircraft anyway :)

Thanks m8, I thought so too but then had a re look at my wife's seat map just now and saw a bassinet, but i guess its 767 thats why etc so not necessary, but suddenly got all paranoid.......

Still paranoid about not getting a bassinet seat on a JASA for the Syd-LAX leg.................

I had a mother with newborn next to me in row 23 on a 767 domestic a couple weeks back.

Worst . Flight. Ever.

You would think there was some kind of proactive seat changing...

I don't know why anyone would use a bassinet on a short Dom flight. Hassle to put and put away, eats into your space and at best you might get 30 mins of baby in bassinet.

If your travelling alone it gives you time to eat your meal or just take a break, most parents would find 30 minutes in that respect priceless.

I'm guessing your not a parent of a new born...
Having a place to put a baby down during a flight, of any length, is an absolute godsend.

You guess incorrectly.

The bassinet on a long haul flight more of a hassle for us than a benefit. The boy at nine months was already too long for it...

Hadn't considered travelling alone too much. However on domestic economy flights (MEL-SYD) I wouldnt be that interested in the meal in any case.

My partner did a little bit and even on a short flight, that 30 minutes was the only real chance they got to eat a meal (it was in J).

Perhaps going off-topic, but reading about babies and so forth it suddenly reminded me of a flight a couple of months ago from melbourne to Brisbane I did. I was travelling solo, in J, in the window seat, and upon boarding a young lady with a little baby ended up seated beside me. I have a couple of kids, and dont mind most children, so this was no big deal for me.

This was a QF flight, and just before takeoff a hostie came and assisted my new fellow traveller with a few things and in the process picked up the baby which promptly barfed over her shoulder. The hostie didn´t bat an eyelid, kept making wonderful comments about the child, and after handing the baby back, disappeared for a few moments and returned dressed in an immaculate uniform. Yet another tick in my book for QF - they have some amazing people.

The flight was wonderful, the young mother was a great neighbour, although concerned re travelling with the little one. We chatted the entire flight, which is not my custom. I admit that the baby was very well behaved, but it was one of the most pleasant flights I have ever had.

Not sure why I mention this, perhaps it is a counter-point to those that have suffered being in a confined space with other´s toddlers. Just remember - we were all once small, we cried and made noises and perhaps even unpleasant smells. I know that travel is dificult for mums. So bassinets can be a Godsend.
