Was doing some research for upcoming business, and as a OW member, looked at various flights BKK-LHR.

Surprisingly, BA flights were cheaper than the same on QF; is there any particular reason for this?

Or just a typical day in the world of airline travel?

Some people would argue that QF is better than BA. That argument could last for days. Certainly if the route was SIN-LHR on the A380 then the justification for price difference would be strong.

Also the UK is bankrupt, most bankers are down to their last million so the demand for premium travel is limited - compared to Oz where the flood of currency in from China is covering up the rest of the cracks in the economy.

Probably the day / week. Load factors have a lot to do with this. What specials or non specials are on at the moment, QF is running a very good special ex Oz at the moment for 2 people companion fares so they may not have any ex anywhere else. I did a fair amount of research a couple of weeks back for BKK-LHR at the end of March and had QF as cheaper except Sundays. BA were more expensive ex LHR on Fridays.... have you looked at CX even with the additional stop on HKG. or even CS to HKG and BA or QF to LHR. Found a good fare last year ex HKG in J last year.

Good luck but it can be anoying:arrow:

Thanks for the updates on the airfares in OZ - they don't get mentioned here very often, and any flights I would be booking will begin and end in BKK, so I guess that will negate the specials currently on offer.

I did look at CX, as I'd like to build up a few more SCs, but they were extremely expensive compared to BA and QF.

Not to worry however, as the actual dates for business haven't been set in stone just yet - was an interesting exercise to see fares across the OW alliance and how they differ. (Did do the "day of the week" flight check as well - and the dates I originally looked at didn't differ at all.)

Would love to be able to get some J fares, but think the client will baulk at 3 people travelling J, but will certainly be booking in Y+ - tired of being cramped in Y seats for hours on end.

And the reverse problem, there's no discount for travelling on the old QF 747's on that route.

Actually, I forgot about them!

Edit: Just had a look online, but they don't offer Y+; only Y or J. :(

If we're talking about BA fares on QF metal being cheaper by a small amount it's probably due to airline fees.

The base fare would be the same but the taxes/fees would be different. Each airline specifies some of these fees, for example fuel surcharges. So, if BA's fees are lower the same fare purchased through them will be cheaper. Considering that QF just raised their fuel surcharges it wouldn't be surprising for the BA-issued fare to be cheaper.

The airline that issues the ticket, rather than the airline that operates the flight, will determine the fees.
