Have the option to fly either QF5 or BA10 on 10oct from SYD on my way to Europe. I believe QF5 has old J seats (at an angle) which I dont prefer but not sure about BA J seats either (are these the old style forward/rear facing ones)? Have never flown J on BA before so never tested them but they looked a bit cramped.
Any advice welcome.

Take BA over QF (old) J.

Lie flat vs sloped bed!

Tough choice - is CX not an option - I would rate them over both BA and QF 744. BA has worse food (just) but a better seat as it is lie flat.

Lay 'flat' isn't everything to me.

I find the BA seats (old and new) skinny and more uncomfortable that Skybeds, mainly due to being a 'foetal' position sleeper.

Also the BA newer style seem relatively flimsy.

Either is better that WHY!

OT: The best Business class set up I have enjoyed is AirNZ's in their 77W's (now been around longhaul for 9 months).

Indeed tough choice. I prefer the food and service on QF but I like the taking off backwards and the completely flat BA "bed". Saying that I can sleep perfectly fine on both. Can you make a combo of BA15 to SIN and then QF5 to FRA or the other way round depending on where you need to go?

Thanks - will probably try BA product as have not tried them before (go for backward seat). Coming back via South Africa so have only 1 choice (this time)

Service - QF
Food & wine - QF
Bed/ seat - BA (true lie flat vs slope)
Once QF upgrade all the 747's to the A380 seats BA wont have any advantage. I always go for the flat seat as getting some sleep is paramount.

That's how I see it too. I do agree with serfty that the BA seats are a little narrow but I prefer the horizontal flat seat. The moment QF upgrade the 747 it is QF for me..........price permitting!!!!

Flew BA 10 on 16th September SYD-BKK. Seat 64A, absolutely superb seat, 3 windows rearward facing, completely private

Should note it is a bassinet seat and therefore you run the risk of being bumped for a family.
My previous favourite BA seat was 62A/K but this is even sweeter :)

Food and service not too shabby either, fairly good wine list and food was reasonable, this is an entree

Apologies for the poor quality iPhone pics.
I fly QF J often and BA less often but this flight was very good.

I used to fly BA in Asia alot their F product was exceptional. that was when they first introduced the 'coffins' !!

Good BA service is good. A find that with QF these days as well. So go for the seat. Try BA if you haven't previously.

What is the routing back through Africa, via JNB then onto QF63?

Thanks Princess Fiona - looks like the seat to go for. As for routing back to Oz - AMS-PRG-AUH-CPT-JNB-SYD. Long way to SA but great price on Etihad (codeshare) in J.
