Interesting new proposition from BA.

I've just been doing the maths on this, and I think it might actually be quite a good deal. It's better value than buying Avios at a 50% bonus.

Had a think of my options. Other than the obvious short haul 4,500 points awards, I think Multi-carrier awards could be decent value.
200,000 points is exactly enough for award within 20,000 miles in Business so potentially a trip to Europe seems doable or USA. $3200 Dollaroos for that seems to be quite good (gotta add taxes of course).

Short-haul Y awards are now 6,000 Avios and J are 12,500 Avios (up to 650 miles). But yes.

I actually think this could be decent value for redeeming QF J short-haul awards. Works out to be around AUD234 per SYD-MEL J flight with an annual Adventurer subscription.

Ahh right! Only 4,500 for Intra Europe now!
Another sweet spot I think is Melbourne to Perth, falls just under the 2000 mile cap for the next zone.
Also love the reward seat guarantee they got over at BA so if you are diligent enough 4 seats in Business to Europe isn't impossible after all!

I have some GBP "trapped" in the UK from when I was living there. I wonder if this might well be an excellent way to use some of the £...will take a look this week.

How many Avios required for MEL-PER in Y/J?

Zone 3 1151-2000 miles
11,000/22,000 (Y/J)

Beware that you'll probably need to call BA for award bookings on QF ex HBA as they're mostly QantasLink. (We have the same problem ex CBR.) Other than that, worth looking into :)
I’m sure Ihave redeemed Avios for flights ex HBA before. Will recheck, though.

Not too shabby.

But I still prefer my annual “The Economist” subscription for 15/18K Avios paid in CAD for ~1.3 cpp AUD. Just need to make sure you play with BA account location settings and find the CAD currency payment option because the Economist has enforced geotracking for payment which automatically prices in USD for Aussies. I also claim back the marginal tax rate for “investment related purposes” to bring it down even further.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Channelling Pauline - “Please explain?”… Do you get to claim depreciation if BA devalue points? 😳

Also, presumably QF PC/PC+ still get SCs on QF redemptions (not to mention the occasional bonus on some others)?

I’m claiming a subscription to The Economist as a Tax expense directly related to my financial investments in Australia. The ATO doesn’t have any idea about some Avios points that came along with it. You have an invoice for your subscription to the Economist; you’re not buying points at Avios.com.

I‘m not a PC member but I assume that since you’re not redeeming QF points they would be ineligible?

Sorry to side track this thread Matt.

My bad. I just glanced at your “The Economist” in quotes and read it one of the subscription options in Matt’s post 😳. Yes, I must going mad or need an eye test or both. But that now makes sense - I should investigate further…

Meanwhile, who’s done the sums on buying Avios and redeeming for QR J ex Oz to Europe? (since we can’t effectively use our QFF pts…).

I think one of the issues with the sums is that at 180K J return SYD-LHR on QR you will be waiting a while on the subscription to get enough to redeem and who knows what could happen with redemption charts and availability meantime.
Agreed, I think if that is the goal then you are probably better off waiting for a J sale - ex-Asia.

Yeah, you could effectively be paying upto two years in advance of actual travel. eg worse case the flights you want are only available for booking 11-12 mths out from when you finally accrue enough points.

Not so bad if you‘re already sitting on a stash and can start burning them straight away.

You must be joking....one of the most popular routes...UK..AUS. And you try getting those four seats back home...on BA no way. (And try getting them outbound)
